Anyone
passing the Parade Tent down at the bottom of Peel Park at the Mela
weekend may have wondered about the giant construction standing
outside.
Those
daring to take a closer look may have realised this was not something
from Doctor Who or War Of The Worlds but a percussion instrument
designed to be played by many people.
 |
| A
monster from out of space or a giant percussion instrument? |
The
Mela also provided visitors with a chance to see what weird and
wonderful sounds they could make using these strange instruments.
Inside the tent people were at work silk-screening and the whole
place was a mass of wonderful colour.
The
theme of this year's Parade is Rivers And Routes (Roots) and it
is hoped when it takes to the city centre's street on Saturday 25th
June a river of people will indeed provide a river of colour.
An
equally exotic soundtrack is promised for the event and over 1000
people are expected to take part.
 |
| Not
only were many materials available inside the Parade tent but
old maps of Bradford to help people develop their ideas |
The
Lord Mayor's Carnival Parade will start at Crown Court Plaza at
3.15pm on Saturday and pass along Broadway and Bridge Street before
climbing up Tyrrel Street, Bank Street and Kirkgate. It will cross
the top of the city centre from Cheapside to Westgate and come back
down Godwin Street to Centenary Square where there will be a greeting
from the Lord Mayor.
And
the fun does not end there! A Post Parade Party kicks off in Centenary
Square at 4.30pm, featuring the bands that accompanied the parade
as well as such acts as Xplosion, Stylin It, the Front Line Initiative
and the Deuce Crew.
Artist
Joe Caswell has been working with Bradford schoolchildren to create
the rest of the giant instruments featured in the Parade. For those
who helped make them, these could be the real stars of the afternoon!
