Mahn Maung, 36, Umpium camp

Two of my brothers are KNLA fighters [rebel soldiers], and my parents begged me not to fight too.

But even though I didn’t, the government confiscated our land, so I came here to Thailand.

I tried to go back to my village in 2002, to show my eldest son, but even my friends thought I was a KNLA fighter so we had to come back here for safety.
