New push for prison improvements
La Moye Prison
La Moye is due for inspection
A Jersey deputy has added his voice to calls for improvements at Jersey's La Moye prison.

Deputy Roy Le Herrissier said rehabilitation facilities at La Moye were top of the list.

La Moye is due for an inspection later this month by Her Majesty's Chief Inspector of Prisons.

Most of the recommendations from the last inspection have still not been put into action, prompting calls by the governor for more staff.

Forced compromise

Mr Herrissier said: "You give long sentences because of the deterrent effect you hope to impose.

"But I think unfortunately because of conditions there is not an awful lot of rehabilitation."

Since taking up the role last summer, governor Steven Guy Gibbens has been vocal in his criticism of conditions at the prison.

Mr Gibbens has already been forced into a compromise over a new block which is designed for 40 inmates, but will now house 60.
