Prison boss calls for more staff
La Moye Prison
Steven Gibbons also wants to improve the prison's buildings
Jersey's prison governor says he needs 20 more members of staff to improve conditions for inmates at La Moye.

The prison currently has 183 inmates aged between 15 and 70-years-old.

Steven Guy Gibbons, who describes the prison as the worst he has seen in 29 years, says it is overcrowded, under-resourced and understaffed.

He will tell the Finance and Economics Committee employing 20 people will not be expensive, as it will cost the same as overtime currently being paid for.

Alongside improving the prison buildings, one of his top priorities is to reduce the numbers of prisoners re-offending by employing more staff and more teachers to engage the inmates.

Some prisoners do correspondence courses, but there is currently only one part-time teacher and a few volunteers for inmates.
