Age Group : 7-9,9-11,11-14,14-16
Subject : Art & Design
Topic : Art history, Painting and drawing, Portraits
Keywords : Brenda Chamberlain, Bardsey, Welsh artists,
Notes : Having watched the clip pupils could imagine what life was like on Bardsley Island and as a class offer a 'shower' of descriptive words reminiscent of a remote island. Pupils (individually or in two's or three's) to write a poem about a remote island and illustrate it trying to capture its essence. Ask pupils to look at and discuss in depth Brenda Chamberlain's portrait images in the clip and the image of the face from her sketches and then begin by doing a pencil or charcoal portrait of themselves or a peer. They could then, having done some experimental colour mixing practice, paint a self portrait/ portrait of a peer - they should also think carefully and include a background and foreground if this is to be a part of the painting. Teachers to choose one of the artists' paintings per group - stick a postcard sized colour copy of it in the middle of an A3 sheet of paper and give each group of pupils a list of questions to discuss about the painting and let the pupils jot down their answers or thoughts on the A3 paper around the image. See Brenda Chamberlain for information on Chamberlain's life.
