Where to Study

So - you’ve decided you want to carry on in full-time education after Year 11 and you know what course you want to take. But have you thought about where you are going to study?

There may be good and bad reasons for choosing different places, but no right or wrong answers. What matters is what’s right for you!

Which Way Now?

Sixth form

Safe and familiar?
Be with your friends?
Small is beautiful?
Near where you live?
No change – no stress?

College

New and exciting?
Meet new people?
Big offers more choice?
Gets you used to travel?
You have to leave school sometime?

Different places - different courses

Not all sixth forms and colleges offer the same range of subjects or combinations of subjects.

GCE Advanced/AS levels
Large sixth forms, tertiary and sixth form colleges usually offer a wide range of A/AS levels. Smaller sixth forms and FE colleges may be more limited.

GNVQs and AVCEs
Colleges usually offer a fairly wide range, depending on size. Sixth form GNVQ provision varies considerably from school to school. GNVQ Intermediate could be an alternative to resits; AVCE is an alternative to AS/GCE Advanced.

Job-specific FE courses
Although sixth forms occasionally offer these courses, you’ll find most of them in colleges.

Finding out more

Sixth form courses
If you’re in an 11-18 school you can find out about courses available in the sixth form from your school.

To find out about sixth form courses in other schools, get in touch directly and ask to speak to the Head of Sixth or for a sixth form prospectus.

College courses
Your careers adviser or local Careers Centre will usually have prospectuses for colleges in their area or you can contact colleges directly. Many colleges have web sites with information about courses. Visit Links to find out more.

HOT TIP!

If you’re thinking about college, why not attend your local college Open Day? You can see what’s it’s like there and talk to students and tutors.
