Other FE courses
Know where
you’re headed job-wise?
Want a more job-specific course than AVCE?
Your local college may offer the course for you!
What
other FE courses are there?
There
are other full-time courses you can take at 16+ apart from
GCE Advanced and AVCE. These courses lead to qualifications, like
NVQs, BTEC Diplomas and the CACHE qualifications in nursery
nursing and child care. These qualifications are linked to
more specific jobs or careers, so you need to be fairly sure
that you know what sort of job you want to do before you choose
this option.
Some
subjects you can take:
- Animal
care
- Equine
(horse) management
- Fashion
- Photography
- Beauty
- Hairdressing
- Office
skills
- Child
care and nursery nursing
- Catering
- Engineering

and other land-based subjects
- Sports
studies
- Performing
arts
What
are BTEC courses?
BTEC courses
are similar to GNVQs/AVCEs but are more closely linked to specific
careers like Photography or Electronic Engineering.
A BTEC
First Diploma is roughly equivalent to four C grade GCSEs, while the BTEC
National Diploma is equivalent to two full GCE Advanced or a twelve-unit AVCE,
so you can use it to apply to
university or to find a job.
What
are NVQs?
NVQs,
or National Vocational Qualifications, are job-specific qualifications.
You can take them at different levels - Level 1 is the easiest.
NVQs show
employers that you have been trained and have reached a certain
level of skill in a particular occupation like hairdressing
or welding.
Most NVQs
are taken by people in work or training, but some schools
and colleges run full-time courses leading to NVQs.

Another
way to get job-specific qualifications like NVQs is
to opt for Training at Work and take a Modern Apprenticeship
or National Traineeship.
