1999: Australia rejects republic

Australians rejected proposals to become a republic on 6 November 1999.

The landmark referendum was to decide whether Australia would break ties with the British monarchy and replace Queen Elizabeth II as the head of state.

In the final count, “no” votes led 54.87% to 45.13%.
