1980: How Midlands Today works

On the 28 September 1964 Barry Lankester welcomed viewers to BBC Midlands Today for the first time.

Since then it has become one of the longest running regional television news programmes in the UK, reporting on everything from the opening of Spaghetti Junction to the Birmingham bombings.

This footage from the 1980s shows how BBC Midlands Today worked to help bring the news to its viewers.

In September 2024, BBC Midlands Today took its TV sofa on tour to celebrate the programme's 60th anniversary.
