1992: European ministers sign Maastricht Treaty

Ministers from the 12 countries in the European Community (EC) took another step towards political and economic union by signing the Maastricht Treaty in February 1992.

The treaty meant the EC became known as the European Union, and laid down a definite timetable and framework for economic and monetary union.
