1996: First GM food goes on sale in UK

The first genetically modified, or GM, food went on sale in British supermarkets in February 1996.

Genetically modified tomato puree was produced from fruit that had the rotting gene removed.

However, some critics dubbed the modified products "Frankenstein foods" and warned of a consumer boycott.
