1989: Guildford Four released after 15 years
The Guildford Four have their convictions quashed by the Court of Appeal on 19 October 1989.
The three men and one woman had been jailed for life in 1975 for the bombing of pubs in Guildford. The attacks left five people dead and 100 injured.
Avon and Somerset Police investigating the case revealed serious flaws in how Surrey police officers had noted the confessions from the four. The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Lane, found that this made the original convictions unsafe, and the convictions were quashed.
