1996: Explosion rocks central Manchester

More than 200 people were injured in a bomb explosion in central Manchester on 15 June 1996.

A local television station had received a telephone warning as the city centre filled with weekend shoppers. One hour and 20 minutes later, police were still clearing hundreds of people from a huge area of central Manchester.

Army bomb disposal experts were using a remote-controlled device to examine a suspect van when it blew up in an uncontrolled explosion.
