1962: Peter O'Toole on Lawrence of Arabia
"Impressive from the west, a mere shell of plaster and wooden framework from the east"
The sprawling replica set of Aqaba was built in Almeria, Spain, for a 3 minute scene in the Oscar winning Lawrence of Arabia. It was here that Monitor caught up with actor Peter O'Toole and discussed how he tackled the demanding title role of T.E. Lawrence in the epic drama.
Directed by David Lean, the film was based on Lawrence's own account of his role during the Arab Revolt in World War I, and premiered in London on the 10th of December, 1962.
Originally broadcast 25 November, 1962.
