1986: Big Bang takes effect at London Stock Exchange

The London Stock Exchange is deregulated on 27 October 1986.

The event, referred to as the ‘Big Bang’, introduces new rules for trading, allowing deals to be done over the phone or on computers, rather than face to face.

The change also opens the market to foreign firms, helping to develop London as an international financial centre.

Originally broadcast on 27 October 1986.
