1957: Government announces women peerages
The Government announces plans to introduce women peerages in the House of Lords on 30 October 1957.
The scheme involves the creation of male and female life peerages, allowing distinguished and experienced people without hereditary titles to enter the House.
Lady Violet Bonham Carter, the first female President of the Liberal Party, is interviewed on the government's plans. She was created a life peer herself in 1964, becoming Baroness Asquith of Yarnbury.
