2007: Treaty of Lisbon signing
Prime Minister Gordon Brown belatedly signs the EU reform treaty, having missed a ceremony attended by leaders of the 26 other member states.
Mr Brown delayed his trip to Lisbon so he could appear before a Commons select committee scrutinising his government.
The Lisbon Treaty eventually became law on 1 December 2009. Under EU rules, the treaty had to be ratified by all 27 member states before coming into force. The last country to ratify the treaty was the Czech Republic, which completed the process on 3 November 2009.
