Gough still confident

Darren Gough hopes he will still make England's squad for the Ashes series in Australia at the end of the year.

The Yorkshire fast bowler has missed most of the season because of a knee injury.

He had surgery on his troubled right knee for the third time last week and is back in training.

It's my third time, but I would have hoped to be fit after the first one

His only appearances for England this season were during the triangular one-day international series.

But his most recent setback caused fears his career could be over.

Mentally strong

Gough, who has been watching England's bowlers toil in the third Test against India at Headingley, said: "I think I'll be fit enough - the surgeon is confident.

"It's my third time, but I would have hoped to be fit after the first one.

"It's frustrating for everyone but I'm determined to be on that flight out there.

"It's been a hard year for me but people have always said I'm mentally strong and especially so with injuries."

Gough, who has taken 228 wickets in 58 Tests, will be hoping to be in the England squad which leaves for Perth on 18 October.
