Elliott to play for Yorkshire

Yorkshire have named Australian opener Matthew Elliott as Darren Lehmann's replacement for the final month of the season.

Lehmann, who has passed 1000 Championship runs for the fourth successive season, will joing Australia's one-day squad in Kenya at the end of the month.

And Ricky Ponting's side then take part in the ICC Champions Trophy in Sri Lanka.

Elliot represented Glamorgan in 2000, scoring 1076 first-class runs, but opted out of a following year after succumbing to a long-term knee-injury.

He returned to captain Victoria in 2001/02, scoring 780 first-class runs at an average of 43, and was also named the team's one-day player of the year.

Elliott, who has played in 20 Tests for Australia, has found himself out in the cold in recent times, due to his injury problems and the outstanding partnership of Matthew Hayden and Justin Langer.

His finest moment came at Headingley in 1997, when a marathon 199 rescued Australia from 50 for four, to record an innings victory.

Elliot will also have a Lord's final to look forward to after Yorkshire's C&G Trophy semi-final win against Surrey.

But the Tykes remain bottom of County Championship Division One, 29 points short of avoiding relegation with six matches remaining.

Vice-captain Richard Blakey is expected to lead the side again.
