Kent seal deserved victory
Ed Smith's batting has put Kent in fine shape
County Championship D1, Tunbridge Wells, day four: Kent 343 and 195-6 beat Sussex 180 & 354 by four wickets
Points: Kent 18, Sussex 3
Kent survived the odd anxious moment on the fourth morning at Tunbridge Wells to seal their second Championship win of the season. Requiring just 58 with seven wickets in hand, Kent flirted with danger by losing three wickets before time - and runs - ran out for Sussex to steal an unlikely win. The crucial wicket of Ed Smith, for 82, was taken in the opening overs by James Kirtley, who looked most likely to render Kent's straightforward task difficult. Mark Davis then had Paul Nixon caught behind via an attempted sweep for 32, and when Kirtley removed Mark Ealham (17) in identical fashion 19 runs were still needed. But Matthew Walker and Min Patel, both unbeaten on 13, kept their cool to wrap up a deserved victory for the hosts.
Kent: D P Fulton (Capt), R W T Key, E T Smith, A Symonds, M J Walker, M A Ealham, P A Nixon (Wkt), B J Trott, M M Patel, M J Saggers, A Khan. Sussex: R R Montgomerie, M W Goodwin, K J Innes, P A Cottey, M H Yardy, T R Ambrose, R S C Martin-Jenkins, M J Prior (Wkt), M J G Davis, R J Kirtley (Capt), J D Lewry. Umpires: A A Jones and B Leadbeater
