Amelie Mauresmo eases to victory in Paris
Thursday's WTA round-up
Paris Indoor Open French third seed Amelie Mauresmo made the quarter-finals after powering past Ai Sugiyama in straight sets. Mauresmo, winner of the event in 2001, grew in confidence throughout the match to complete a 7-5 6-2 win over her Japanese rival. "It was hard work in the beginning, but wonderful in the end," said a delighted Mauresmo after the 1hr 32min battle. It was a different story for compatriot Stephanie Foretz, who was crushed 6-0 6-4 by Greek eighth seed Eleni Daniilidou. Meanwhile, top seed Serena Williams will meet Janette Husarova in the quarter-finals after the Slovak beat Slovenia's Tina Pisnik 6-4 6-3 in 69 minutes.
Indian Open Unseeded Italian Flavia Pennetta caused a major surprise by beating fourth seed Mary Pierce 7-6 6-3 to make the quarter-finals. Pennetta won the first set tie-break and then eased to the win in a one-sided second set. "I never dreamt that I would be playing Pierce and would beat her. It still hasn't sunk in," said the 21-year-old. In other second-round matches, second seed Tamarine Tanasugarn was tested by Russian teenager Maria Kirilenko before winning 7-6 6-3. Japan's Akiko Morigami beat Croatia's Silvija Talaja while fifth seed Iroda Tulyaganova rallied from a set down to get past Tzipora Obziler.
