Paul Cullen has succeeded Karl Harrison as head coach of England after the Salford boss stepped down last week.
"It's been an ambition of mine to coach an international team and I'm honoured to be appointed to the England team," said the Warrington Wolves coach.
Cullen was assistant coach to John Kear on the 2002 England tour of Fiji and Tonga and took charge of Lancashire for the 2003 Origin clash with Yorkshire.
Harrison ended his two-year spell in charge to spend time with his family.
Graeme Thompson, the RFL's performance director, said: "We've been developing career pathways for young British coaches and Paul's appointment as coach to the England team is part of that programme.
