Great Britain captain Andy Farrell admitted his side had not risen to the occasion as they were beaten 44-4 by Australia in the Tri-Nations final.
GB paid for early mistakes as they conceded six first-half tries.
"The way they performed in the first half was awesome. We dropped a lot of the ball and you can't do that. But full credit to them," said Farrell.
"We have to hold our hands up. We didn't perform, we played poorly but we can take a lot from the series."
Great Britain forward Adrian Morley, who plays his club rugby for Sydney Roosters, said he thought his side had been over-awed by the occasion.
"I think we played the occasion rather than the game and went away from what we had been successful at in the last few weeks," said Morley.
