Paul Scallan has become the first jockey to be punished for
breaching restrictions on mobile phone.
The Irish-born apprentice, who had partnered the unplaced Born In America for Aidan O'Brien in
the Dubai Duty Free Mill Reef Stakes, was found using his
mobile on the track by a member of the Jockey Club's security team, and was fined £250.
Scallan moved to Britain towards the end of last season from O'Brien's
Ballydoyle yard.
He won two Group Three races while in Ireland and finished second in the Irish
Derby and in the Eclipse on Sholokhov.
Jockey Club spokesman John Maxse was at Newbury and confirmed the details of
the incident on the day that the new 'phone zone' was first enforced on British
racecourses.
"One of our racecourse officials saw Scallan using his phone on the
racecourse outside of the weighing room," he explained.
"At an inquiry, he admitted that he had heard the announcement in the
weighing room 30 minutes before the first race that phones had to be
switched off and that he had no excuse for not doing so.
"Consequently, the
stewards fined him £250."
Maxse revealed that no jockey had chosen to make use of the 'phone zone' facility all day.
"My understanding is that Mr Scallan wanted to use the area and was told not
to do so by the other jockeys," he said.
