Berestov wins gold
Russia's Dmitry Berestov won weightlifting gold in the 105 kg class.

Berestov combined a lift of 195 kg in the snatch with 230 kg in the clean-and-jerk for a winning total of 425 kg.

Hungarian Ferenc Gyurkovics and Igor Razoronov of Ukraine both finished on 420 kg but Gyurkovics finished ahead because of a lighter body weight.

World champion Said Saif Asaad of Qatar had looked poised to give the Gulf state a gold medal, until he injured his leg on his second lift.

Asaad, the 2000 bronze medalist, was last year's world champion.

But he failed to get into the medals after completing only his first two snatch attempts, missing all three attempts in the clean and jerk.

The field was unusually wide open, partly because European champion Tsagaev was absent and 2000 Olympic champion Hossein Tavakoli of Iran also did not return to defend his title.
