O'Sullivan and Carroll disappoint
Sonia O'Sullivan
Sonia O'Sullivan found the 1500m pace too hot
Sonia O'Sullivan's World Indoor Championships ended in further disappointment when she finished ninth and last in the women's 1500m final on Sunday.

The Irishwoman, seventh in the 3000m final on Saturday, failed to respond to a mid-race surge from Portugal's Carla Sacramento and quickly dropped off the pace.

Morocco's Hasna Benhassi won the title which completed a double for her country after Hicham El Guerrouj's victory in the men's 3000m minutes earlier.

The 22-year-old, reigning African 800m outdoor champion, sprinted home in 4:10.83 to beat Romania's Olympic silver medallist Violetta Beclea-Szekely.

The Romanian clocked 4:11.17, while Russia's Natalya Gorelova (4.11.74) sneaked the bronze from longtime leader Sacramento.

Mark Carroll
Mark Carroll finished seventh in 3000m final

O'Sullivan, Olympic silver medallist in the 5000m, paid for her extraordinary decision to run both the 1500 and 3000 by finishing tailed off last, nine seconds adrift of the winner.

Ireland's Mark Carroll finished seventh in the 3000m final while Britain's John Mayock was fourth.

El Guerrouj won the title in 7.37.74 after putting in a typical mid-race surge to break up the 12 strong field.

Both Mayock and Carroll were caught unawares by El Guerrouj's break.

Mayock made a brave late bid to get into the medals but had to be satisfied with fourth place.

Belgium's Mohammed Mourhit took second in 7.38.94 while Spain's Alberto Garcia (7.39.96) earned bronze.

Mayock clocked 7.44.08 while Carroll's time was 7.46.79.
