America's Masters champion Mark O'Meara claimed his second major of the season when the Open was last held at Royal Birkdale in 1998.
O'Meara beat compatriot Brian Watts in a play-off but British fans will remember 17-year-old amateur Justin Rose, who chipped in on the 18th to finish fourth.
Since then changes have been made to 16 of the 18 holes. At 7,173 yards - par 70 - it will play 155 yards longer.
The alterations, including new bunkering and mounds, have been designed to make the course tighter to reward strategic play and accurate shot-making.
