Seven English Football League players went out of the World Cup over the course of the weekend.
Wolves striker Raul Jimenez and West Ham defender Edson Alvarez were in the Mexico team which lost 3-2 to England in a thrilling last-16 contest at the Azteca Stadium in the early hours of Monday morning.
Jimenez netted three times for his nation at the tournament, including a 69th-minute penalty against the Three Lions, but will now return to Molineux to prepare for the Championship season after signing from Fulham this summer.
Southampton forward Cyle Larin and Norwich City midfielder Ali Ahmed both featured for Canada in their last-16 encounter with Morocco on Saturday, but could not prevent the co-hosts from suffering a 3-0 defeat.
Larin scored two goals in the group stages for Canada to help them progress to the knockouts for the first time in their history, while Middlesbrough defender Alfie Jones was also part of the squad but did not play.
Leicester City duo Jordan Ayew and Abdul Fatawu played for Ghana in their 1-0 loss to Colombia in the last 32 on Saturday.

West Ham United have appointed Nils Koppen as their new director of player recruitment.
Koppen will leave his role as technical director at FC Copenhagen to join the Championship club, subject to a work visa being acquired.
The 41-year-old Belgian has previously worked for Rangers and PSV Eindhoven and will work alongside a new football leadership structure.
"I am really pleased to have this fantastic opportunity and very much looking forward to joining such a big club and being a part of something new," he told the club's website., external
"I'm also looking forward to working with Nuno [Espirito Santo] - he is a very experienced and highly respected head coach."

Southend United have signed teenage defender Rayan Oyebade on a season-long loan from Championship side West Ham United.
The 19-year-old played 17 times in Premier League 2 for the Hammers last season, also helping them finish runners-up in the National League Cup.

Four English Football League stars have exited the World Cup after DR Congo and Senegal suffered defeats in the last 32 on Wednesday.
West Ham right-back Aaron Wan-Bissaka and Burnley defender Axel Tuanzebe were both in the starting line-up for DR Congo's 2-1 loss to England, the African side having led through a seventh-minute goal from Brian Cipenga.
Watford's Edo Kayembe came on as a DR Congo substitute in the 76th minute before Harry Kane netted a second goal to send the Three Lions through.
Meanwhile, Hammers left-back El-Hadji Malick Diouf featured for Senegal as an extra-time substitute in their game against Belgium but a controversial late penalty from Youri Tielemans knocked the Lions of Teranga out of the competition.

West Ham United will further assess midfielder Tomas Soucek's ankle injury later this week.
The 31-year-old sustained ligament damage to his left ankle during Czech Republic's final World Cup group game against Mexico last Thursday.
Soucek appeared to roll his ankle while attempting to close down Mexico goalkeeper Guillermo Ochoa, and was helped off the pitch by team-mates before being stretchered away in the 87th minute of the match.
West Ham United's performance director Richard Collinge told the club's website: , external"Tomas will return to London later this week for further evaluation and assessment on his ankle before a final decision is made on the best form of injury management, with the aim of returning to action as soon as possible."

Gambling firm Boyle Sports has opted to continue their front-of-shirt sponsorship deal with West Ham United despite the recent allegations against former chairman David Sullivan and the club's relegation to the Championship.
Last month, Boyle Sports said they were "extremely concerned at the serious nature of the allegations levelled against David Sullivan" after a joint BBC Panorama and Times investigation into allegations of sexually exploitative and predatory behaviour against the 77-year-old.
Sullivan said he "categorically" denied the claims, which span the period when he made a fortune from pornography and newspapers.
However, since the allegations were made public, Sullivan has resigned as co-chair and Czech billionaire Daniel Kretinsky has become the club's largest shareholder after striking a deal with fellow co-chair Vanessa Gold.
It is understood senior officials at Boyle Sports have been impressed at how the changes were made so quickly and are delighted to be part of what is being viewed as a new era at the east London club.
West Ham have already sold 45,000 season tickets for the new campaign, their first outside the top flight since the 2011-12 season.
Boyle Sports are only able to continue as front of shirt sponsors due to West Ham's relegation. From the start of the 2026-27 campaign, gambling firms are no longer allowed to be front of shirt sponsors in the Premier League.
"West Ham United is one of the most recognisable clubs in English football, with a proud history and a passionate fanbase," said Boyle Sports chief executive Vlad Kaltenieks.
"We were proud to begin our partnership last season, but this is only the start."

Mateus Fernandes' future should become clearer over the next few days as Manchester United and Tottenham and battle it out to sign the West Ham midfielder.
Fernandes was not intended to be part of the first lot of Hammers players that returns for pre-season training next Monday.
However, it is anticipated a formal bid is close to being made which is likely to bring the situation to a head.
Fernandes is understood to have an open mind about where he goes, with his agent Jorge Mendes speaking to both Premier League clubs.
It is not thought there is an immediate need for West Ham to sell the player to comply with financial regulations, although manager Nuno Espirito Santo knows there will have to be departures following relegation to the Championship.
Manchester United have been keen admirers of the 21-year-old and remain in talks with West Ham. However, it has appeared Spurs were more likely to reach the Hammers' asking price, thought to be about £80m.
The priority at Old Trafford is strengthening the central midfield area and they have already agreed a £35m deal with Atalanta for Ederson, but his arrival has been delayed by a late call-up to the Brazil World Cup squad.
United's players are due to return for pre-season training on 9 July and so far, other than out-of-contract duo Casemiro and Tyrell Malacia, Michael Carrick's squad remains as it was at the end of last season, with no significant departures or arrivals.
The plan to sell Manuel Ugarte will now have to be shelved after his serious injury on World Cup duty with Uruguay. Meanwhile, striker Joshua Zirkzee is still at the club, and sources have dismissed rumours around the exit of midfielder Mason Mount.

West Ham winger Crysencio Summerville saw his shot saved during a dramatic penalty shootout against Morocco to knock the Netherlands out of the World Cup on Tuesday.
Summerville had provided the assist for Cody Gakpo's opener in the 72nd minute, but Morocco equalised in the 91st to force extra time.
Both sides had missed two previous penalties before the 24-year-old stood up to take the fifth for the Dutch side; however Morocco goalkeeper Yassine Bounou denied him, and Ismael Saibari then sealed the win for their opponents.
Burnley's Lyle Foster will also be heading home after South Africa succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Canada.
However, the win for the North American side does mean three English Football League players have made it through to the round of 16 in the World Cup.
Southampton striker Cyle Larin and Ali Ahmed of Norwich City both featured for Canada in the group stage but were unused substitutes for Sunday's knock-out match alongside Middlesbrough's Alfie Jones.
Canada next faces Morocco in Texas on Saturday at 18:00 BST.

Wolves defender Ladislav Krejci also featured for the Czech Republic during the match, captaining the side for all 90 minutes.
