Jones told BBC Radio Devon: "I can't say I'm surprised by the decision because there's been a lot of noise from the fans and in the media.
"But I have to say he has been unlucky. He's worked really hard over the summer making sure he's brought players in.
"He's only six games into the season and I think that's a little bit early to be given the sack."
