1955
Striking return in front of goal The Middlesbroughborn Clough makes his debut for his hometown club at the age of 20 and scores 204 goals in 222 appearances. He wins two England caps in 1959 before moving to Sunderland where he nets 63 goals in just 74 outings before injury intervenes. B" BOn occasions I've been bigheaded. 1965
Moves into management Three years after the end of his playing career Clough moves into management cutting his teeth with Hartlepool United in Division Four where he teams up with longstanding assistant Peter Taylor. 1967
Takes the reinsat the Rams Clough moves up the footballing ladder and joins Derby. He wins the Division Two title in 1969 and the club's first league championship title in 1972. After taking the club to the European Cup semifinals in 1973 he resigns in October after a longrunning dispute with directors. 1973
Managerial merrygoround Clough goes on the management merrygoround lasting nine months at Brighton from November 1973 and a mere 44 days at Leeds in 1974. 1975
Finally settles at Forest Clough joins Nottingham Forest in January 1975 and turns the club around. They are promoted to Division One in 1977 and win the League Cup and championship in 1978. Clough strengthens the side by signing Trevor Francis in 1979 Britain's first £1m player. B" BI wouldn't say I was the best manager in the business but I was in the top one. 1979
Forest first conquer Europe Clough celebrates the first of backtoback European Cup victories. Fresh from another League Cup win Forest are crowned kings of Europe after a 10 win over Malmo in 1979. They retain the trophy 12 months on beating Hamburg by the same scoreline. B" BFor all his horses knighthoods and championships he hasn't got two of what I've got. And I don't mean balls. 1991
Cup defeat starts the closing chapter Clough won the League Cup four times but never got his hands on the FA Cup the only domestic title he failed to land. He came close in 1991 when losing to Tottenham a defeat that signalled the start of the end. He retires after 18 years when they are relegated in 1993. B" BI only ever hit him the once. 2002
Undergoes liver transplant Clough revels in retirement claiming he should have packed up management five years earlier. His health is an ongoing concern and the onetime heavy drinker has a liver transplant in January 2002. Legend dies of stomach cancer Clough who was awarded an OBE in 1991 and made an honourary Freeman of Derby and given the freedom of the city in 2003 dies in Derby City hospital from stomach cancer at the age of 69.
