An entire era in Sri Lanka's cricket era ended when Dav Whatmore left as coach in the wake of the World Cup, and Jayasuriya stepped down as captain.
He will continue to fill a valuable role in both the Test and one-day sides, however, and has had notable success against England both with bat and ball.
In the 2001 series, he was the leading wicket-taker in the three Test series, though it is more as an uncompromising and often explosive hitter that he is best known.
Short of stature and powerfully built, he cuts and pulls with awesome power, his brutal bat-wielding at odds with his shy, gentle nature.
