Runcorn's Robin Reid, a former world champion, gave Calzaghe a serious run for his money on 13 February 1999.
Calzaghe was handed a topsy-turvy split decision in Newcastle, but it was a fight many observers thought Reid had won.
The Welshman damaged his hand early in the fight, which would become a recurring theme as his career wore on.
