  1. Cirstea breaks early in second setpublished at 08:58 GMT 22 January

    Osaka 6-3 0-2 Cirstea*

Naomi Osaka got lucky with the net cord in the first set, but this time it favours Sorana Cirstea and falls back onto the Japanese player's side of the court.

That gives her an extra bit of motivation to go big with her next return and Osaka can only find the net. Two break points.

She doesn't get it on the first, but it's second time lucky...

  2. Duckworth holds servepublished at 08:58 GMT 22 January

    *Sinner 6-1 1-2 Duckworth

This is much better from James Duckworth and he's really beginning to get the crowd into this now.

The 88th-ranked Australian puts together a solid service game to wrap up his first hold to love. That will feel very good indeed.

    Gea 6-4 3-6 6-3 5-7 3-3 Wawrinka*

Stan Wawrinka saves the first break point, Arthur Gea netting a forehand.

And he saves the second, following his serve into the net and burying the forehand volley.

  4. Break point Geapublished at 08:56 GMT 22 January

    Gea 6-4 3-6 6-3 5-7 3-3 Wawrinka*

I'd like to know what Stan Wawrinka has done to upset the net cord. His forehand clips the top and rolls back down onto his side - 15-all.

Two more forehand errors. Uh oh.

  5. Sinner saves break point to holdpublished at 08:55 GMT 22 January

    Sinner 6-1 1-1 Duckworth*

Ah, so close. The crowd rally behind James Duckworth as he reaches his first break point. They can sense he's building a bit of momentum here.

But his failure to capitalise is punished mercilessly by Jannik Sinner, who serves his way to safety and levels at one game apiece.

  6. Cirstea holdspublished at 08:54 GMT 22 January

    *Osaka 6-3 0-1 Cirstea

Sorana Cirstea is under pressure on serve but instead of fading away she goes on the attack, swiping the ball away with venom. Eventually it pays off and she has space to plant a winner down the line.

  7. Gea holdspublished at 08:53 GMT 22 January

    Gea 6-4 3-6 6-3 5-7 3-3 Wawrinka*

At times, Stan Wawrinka is just hanging in there. At others, he's rolling back the years. A clinical forehand pass for 0-30.

A helpful net cord and then a smart serve and backhand volley set-up with Wawrinka chipping up his return draw Arthur Gea back to 30-all.

He drags Wawrinka off court with a wide second serve and punches a forehand into the opposite corner for 40-30 and closes out the hold at the net.

    *Sinner 6-1 0-1 Duckworth

Am I allowed to admit that I'm half watching this while also keeping one eye on Stan Wawrinka's wonderful exploits? I hope so...

James Duckworth enters uncharted territory as he wins two points in a single Jannik Sinner service game for the first time - oh, and he draws another error to reach deuce!

OK, you have my full attention, Mr Duckworth...

    Osaka 6-3 0-0 Cirstea*

Brilliant from Naomi Osaka, who reacts well to the drop shot and then stands firm at the net to acrobatically swat away Sorana Cirstea's attempt at a pass - saving the break point.

A forehand winner and an ace follows, and that's the first set wrapped up for the former world number one.

  10. Duckworth holds at start of set twopublished at 08:48 GMT 22 January

    *Sinner 6-1 0-1 Duckworth

After the first set disappeared within just 26 minutes, James Duckworth needs a quick reset here.

That's exactly the start he required! The Australian races forward to pop away a volley and hold serve at the start of set two.

  11. Wawrinka holdspublished at 08:47 GMT 22 January

    *Gea 6-4 3-6 6-3 5-7 2-3 Wawrinka

    Huge hold for Stan Wawrinka!

An ace for advantage and a forehand error from Arthur Gea to secure the game. Wawrinka had followed his previous stroke into the net. He's staying aggressive.

  12. Break point Cirsteapublished at 08:46 GMT 22 January

    *Osaka 5-3 Cirstea

Naomi Osaka lets out a deep breath and tells herself to calm it down after letting a forehand sail long.

But that hasn't worked and she lets out a little squeal after the next point when she finds the fence, gifting Cirstea the chance to level the set.

  13. Deucepublished at 08:46 GMT 22 January

    Gea 6-4 3-6 6-3 5-7 2-2 Wawrinka*

Another huge celebration from Stan Wawrinka. Pointing to his temple and waving both arms to the crowd, encouraging them to bring the noise.

  14. Break point Geapublished at 08:45 GMT 22 January

    Gea 6-4 3-6 6-3 5-7 2-2 Wawrinka*

Oh, Arthur Gea! His taped knees don't seem to be impacting his movement. He chases down a drop shot, turns back on himself for a return and raises his arms aloft as Stan Wawrinka finds an unhelpful net cord. The crowd roars for the Frenchman: 0-15.

There's more running from both players two points later and this time, the net cord goes Wawrinka's way, a blistering backhand clipping the top and rattling through Gea's legs.

But, with a couple of forehand errors, Wawrinka is facing another break point.

There were some deep breaths here from James Duckworth.

Just think of the physical side of this, coming from five sets and playing doubles yesterday. It could be a reason as to why he is trying to play quite offensive here.

  16. Game and first set - Sinnerpublished at 08:44 GMT 22 January

    Sinner 6-1 0-0 Duckworth*

Unfortunately for the hopeful home support, Jannik Sinner is several classes above here.

The Italian cruises to the opening set, losing just the single game and only four points on his serve. Totally dominant.

  17. Osaka breaks to serve for setpublished at 08:43 GMT 22 January

    *Osaka 5-3 Cirstea

For the first time, Naomi Osaka advances to the net and it pays off as she manages to land a cross-court winner well out of Sorana Cirstea's reach.

That sets her on her way to a 0-40 lead and three break points. She only needs one, though, as Cirstea can't deal with the pace of Osaka's backhand.

  18. Gea holdspublished at 08:41 GMT 22 January

    Gea 6-4 3-6 6-3 5-7 2-2 Wawrinka*

Arthur Gea, both knees taped, lets out a "come on!" as he holds to 15 with a couple of big first serves.

    Momentum swings again!

  19. Sinner breaks for second timepublished at 08:41 GMT 22 January

    *Sinner 5-1 Duckworth

James Duckworth has not done a whole lot wrong to this point, and once again he's undone by Jannik Sinner's brilliance as he falls 15-30 down on serve.

But a double fault is the last thing he needs here. Never mind two...

He offers up two break points with his first of the match, and then double-faults again on the second of those break points. The atmosphere has fallen flat on Rod Laver Arena.

  20. Osaka saves break point to holdpublished at 08:41 GMT 22 January

    Osaka 4-3 Cirstea*

Sorana Cirstea misses the chance to pull ahead as she pushes the ball wide, and Naomi Osaka offers no second chances.

The 16th seed then makes Cirstea defend for her life, sending her from one side of the court to the other before ending her misery with a booming forehand winner down the line. And that seals the hold.
