Reigning UK champion and world number one Judd Trump has not won a tournament since his success here 12 months ago.

He lost in the final of the Players Championship, the Northern Ireland Open and the Champion of Champions and reached the semi-finals of the Masters, the Championship League, World Grand Prix, the World Championship and the Snooker Championship in Saudi Arabia.

He will not be at the Scottish Open in Edinburgh in the week before Christmas so this is his last chance to win an event in 2025, although he has still been happy with his performances.

"It has been a decent year, a solid six or seven out of 10 with a lot of positives," said 36-year-old Trump after his 6-4 win over Stephen Maguire. "I reached the semi-finals of the Masters, the semi-finals of the Worlds, reached four finals. On that basis you could say I'm one of the in-form players of the year.

"Even if I won here, it would not be a good year compared to other seasons - unless I win seven events in a season then it won't do anything for me. So much is expected of me, if I don't win straight away there's more pressure and you don't have that time when you're at the top.

"Having so many good years in a row, it brings you back down to earth and you just have to work harder. I still really want to win every event and I'm not miles away."

    Trump 6-4 Maguire

    Michael Emons
    BBC Sport at York Barbican

World number one Judd Trump secured a hard-fought first round win over Scotland's Stephen Maguire on the opening day of the 2025 UK Championship at York Barbican.

Trump, who won this event in 2024 and 2011, defeated the Scot 6-4 in a high-quality, entertaining clash to move into the last 16 where he will play China's Si Jiahui.

Maguire, the 2004 winner, made breaks of 86, 111, 82, 86, but also made costly errors, with Trump stealing the eighth frame on a respotted black having trailed 26-61.

Trump has not win a tournament since his success here 12 months ago, losing in the final of the Players' Championship, the Northern Ireland Open and the Champion of Champions, but made breaks of 62, 100, 66 and 62 in the final frame on his way to victory.

  5. Maguire reduces the deficitpublished at 16:17 GMT 29 November 2025

    Trump 5-4 Maguire

A perfect response from Stephen Maguire after losing frame eight on a respotted black as he storms through a superb break of 86 to close the gap to just one frame.

  6. Trump wins dramatic frame on respotted blackpublished at 16:08 GMT 29 November 2025

    Trump 5-3 Maguire

A rueful shake of the head from Stephen Maguire, and you can see why as the eighth frame slips through his fingers.

Leading 61-26, Maguire missed frame ball before leaving a red hanging over the top right pocket. Trump then did the rest to leave it at 61-61 and force a respotted black.

Trump left a chance on for Maguire, but the Scot's thin cut attempt stayed on the table to leave Trump a simple task of making it 5-3.

    Trump 4-3 Maguire

    Judd TrumpImage source, PA Media

Judd Trump edges back ahead on table one, but it is a frame Stephen Maguire will be furious he did not win.

He led 24-1 and had what looked to be a routine red into the middle, but missed by some distance and Trump then made the Scot pay with a break of 67.

Trump then left a red on, but Maguire can't get the two snookers he needed and the world number one is back ahead.

We expected this to be one of the matches of the opening round and it has not disappointed.

  8. Maguire fighting backpublished at 15:21 GMT 29 November 2025

    Trump 3-3 Maguire

It has been a great performance from Stephen Maguire since the mid-session interval. He made 111 in frame five, and now 82 in frame six so that is 193 points without reply against the world number one.

The dividing barrier being lifted up so both sides of the arena can watch Judd Trump v Stephen Maguire

Those on the table two side of the arena have already seen one full match with Si Jiahui beating Ryan Day 6-0 and a big cheer from that side of the York Barbican goes up when the dividing barrier is raised.

That means the whole arena can watch the rest of the Judd Trump v Stephen Maguire match - and what a finish it is likely to be. World number one Trump leads 3-2, after Maguire made a superb century break of 111 in frame five.

  10. Si hammers Day to move into last 16published at 15:03 GMT 29 November 2025
    Breaking

    Si 6-0 Day

China's Si Jiahui is the first man through to the last 16 after making easy work of Wales' Ryan Day.

The Welshman failed to score a single point in four of those six frames, scoring only 55 points in total compared to 521 from Si.

Sixteenth seed Si also potted 151 balls, with only 16 from Day, whose highest break of the afternoon was only 22.

  11. Si one frame from victorypublished at 14:48 GMT 29 November 2025

    Si 5-0 Day

Ryan Day needs something sensational to turn this around. He is now 5-0 down to Si Jiahui after a missed red into the middle from the Welshman when 31-21 behind proved costly.

Day has now scored 55 points in five frames, Si has collected 442.

  12. Trump restores two-frame advantage, a tough day for Ryanpublished at 14:30 GMT 29 November 2025

Trump 3-1 Maguire, Si 4-0 Day

Stephen Maguire has a chance for 2-2 but, when 30-0 ahead, the cue ball takes an unfortunate deflection off a red and heads diagonally down table and into the pocket.

Judd Trump then pounced with 52 and when Maguire failed to connect with a red when trying to escape a snooker with the cue ball tight behind the black, that was the frame over so Trump is halfway there, leading 3-1.

On table two, it is getting painful for Ryan Day, who is now four behind having not registered a point in three of those four frames.

Si Jiahui, a World Championship semi-finalist in 2023, is now two frames away from moving into the last 16. Si has potted 105 balls so far, Day just 10.

  13. Maguire pulls one back, Si moves three aheadpublished at 14:05 GMT 29 November 2025

Trump 2-1 Maguire, Si 3-0 Day

A brilliant response from Stephen Maguire after Judd Trump had taken the opening two frames as the Scot, who won this event in 2004, rattled in a superb break of 86 to get his first frame on the board.

China's Si Jiahui now leads by 3-0 after a break of 80, his best of the match so far, to freeze out Ryan Day in frame three.

Day has only scored 34 points so far today, all of which came in the second frame and he is facing a real battle.

  14. Trump makes first century of the daypublished at 13:50 GMT 29 November 2025

Trump 2-0 Maguire, Si 2-0 Day

Stephen Maguire had the first chance of the second frame, but left himself a tricky red with the rest with hampered cueing, and the red stayed over the pocket to give Trump a chance.

And the world number one took full advantage with a ruthless break of 100, the first century of the day.

Si Jiahui is also looking at a 2-0 lead after taking the second frame 84-34. Day had chances but a failure to sink a long red left the Chinese player an opportunity, which he converted.

  15. Trump and Si take early leadspublished at 13:31 GMT 29 November 2025

Trump 1-0 Maguire, Si 1-0 Day

Last year's tournament got off to an explosive opening as 2023 champion Ronnie O'Sullivan went out on the first day, losing 6-4 to Barry Hawkins.

Reigning title holder Judd Trump is trying to avoid suffering a similar fate and a break of 62 helps him take the opener against 2004 winner Stephen Maguire.

Over on table two, Si Jiahui, who scraped in as an automatic qualifying at 16th in the world rankings, has moved into an early lead against Wales' Ryan Day, thanks to runs of 49 and 61, with the Welshman not picking up a point.
