When it was 9-4 to Ronnie O'Sullivan it looked to be heading one way, but it is anyone's match now.

What a start to the afternoon session for John Higgins.

The way he started this match in the first session he appeared on course for a heavy defeat, but never write off any of this Class of 92.

  3. Higgins draws level with century breakpublished at 13:56 BST 27 April

    Higgins 9-9 O'Sullivan

Timing is everything in sport and John Higgins is peaking just at the right time.

He draws level with Ronnie O'Sullivan thanks to a marvellous century break of 118.

Penny for the thoughts of The Rocket? He looked to have this match all sewn up yesterday.

You don't win four world titles if you can't fight back from tough situations.

Wu Yize may have held a 9-7 lead overnight, now stretched to 10-7, but will already know that Mark Selby is one of the toughest battlers in the game.

You only have to go back to two of Selby's four Crucible successes to see that.

In the 2014 final, he trailed 10-5 to Ronnie O'Sullivan, before winning 18-14 and three years later produced an even better fightback, overturning a 10-4 deficit to John Higgins, before winning it 18-15.

    Higgins 8-9 O'Sullivan

    John Parrott
1991 world champion on BBC Two

John Higgins has hung around this match like a bad smell - and Ronnie O'Sullivan just cannot get rid of him. Ronnie must be thinking 'I was all over in you that first session, how is this 9-8?'

  6. Postpublished at 13:47 BST 27 April

    Higgins 8-9 O'Sullivan

Nip and tuck in the second frame of the afternoon before the table opens up for John Higgins and he goes about building a meaningful break.

Higgins reaches 26 before using an extender to pot a difficult-to-reach red into the right-corner pocket.

Ronnie O'Sullivan is pensive in his chair.

    Higgins 8-9 O'Sullivan

    Ken Doherty
1997 world champion on BBC Two

Ronnie O'Sullivan did all the hard work in that frame then missed a straight red. That was a bid miss but a brilliant response from John Higgins to win the frame.

  10. Higgins takes opening framepublished at 13:31 BST 27 April

    Higgins 8-9 O'Sullivan

John Higgins uses the rest to pot the yellow - the trickiest of the colours - and by the time he misses the pink the opening frame of the session is already sealed in his favour.

The Scot is now just one frame behind Ronnie O'Sullivan.

  11. Postpublished at 13:28 BST 27 April

    Higgins 7-9 O'Sullivan

John Higgins does well to polish off all the reds and is now 54-44 ahead of Ronnie O'Sullivan. With the colours remaining the frame is within his grasp.

    Higgins 7-9 O'Sullivan

    Dennis Taylor
1985 world champion on BBC Two

If Ronnie O'Sullivan knocks that red in he takes the frame. You don't expect him to miss that. If John Higgins can take the frame from here and cut the deficit to one frame we really are in for a special session.

  13. Postpublished at 13:24 BST 27 April

    Higgins 7-9 O'Sullivan

Ronnie O'Sullivan is back in his seat, ruefully sipping water.

A relatively straightforward red into the left-corner pocket rattles the jaws and does not drop. He break ends at 44.

Can John Higgins take the frame from here?

  14. Postpublished at 13:22 BST 27 April

    Higgins 7-9 O'Sullivan.

The black is nestled behind three reds but Ronnie O'Sullivan is able to free it with a superb plant into the bottom-right pocket.

A break of 37 and counting for O'Sullivan.

    Higgins 7-9 O'Sullivan

    Stephen Hendry
Seven-time world champion on BBC Two

How many more session will these two players have against each other in this historic venue? For John Higgins to win this match he has to score heavy when he gets the chance.

  16. Postpublished at 13:19 BST 27 April

    Higgins 7-9 O'Sullivan

We are up and running at the Crucible.

John Higgins draws an early foul from Ronnie O'Sullivan with some tactical play, but the Scot then misses a pink into the middle pocket.

The Rocket rises from his seat with purpose.

    Selby 7-9 Wu

Mark Selby v Wy Yize statistics

Last night Mark Selby battled back in the final frame to cut Wu Yize's lead to two frames.

Like Ronnie O'Sullivan v John Higgins, this one is finally poised.

  18. Postpublished at 13:13 BST 27 April

    Higgins 7-9 O'Sullivan

    Ken Doherty
1997 world champion on BBC Two

Ronnie O'Sullivan played the better of the two players but came out on the losing end of that session last night. John Higgins dug in. Ronnie will have been very disappointed that he only had a two-frame lead because it looked like he was going to run away with it. But you just never write off John Higgins.

  19. Postpublished at 13:11 BST 27 April

    Higgins 7-9 O'Sullivan

Ronnie O'Sullivan v John Higgins stats

The statistics of the match only tell part of the story of a match which has ebbed and flowed.

A brilliant fightback by John Higgins last night means the Crucible are in for a treat this afternoon as he resumes his second-round match with Ronnie Sullivan.

  20. Postpublished at 13:07 BST 27 April

    Higgins 7-9 O'Sullivan

    John Parrott
1991 world champion on BBC Two

We know the Crucible is a working theatre and if you wanted theatre that last frame yesterday evening had all of it. They both had chances which they didn't make, Ronnie O'Sullivan wrapped his knuckles on the table and John Higgins is the Scottish limpet who will just not go away.
