  2. 'We think very fondly of Tandy'published at 13:26 GMT 19 February

Wales head coach Steve Tandy was Scotland defence coach between 2019 and July 2025.

Townsend was asked if he's exciting about the match-up:

"Coaches don't go up against each other," he said. "It's the players.

"It will be great to see him after the game. We've been sharing messages - not many this week - but in the first couple of games.

"We think very fondly of Steve, he spent a long time with us and has been a big inluence on our players.

"I'm sure after the game we can have a few beers."

  3. Townsend wants opportunities for Van der Merwe to runpublished at 13:22 GMT 19 February

Townsend went into a bit more detail on Duhan van der Merwe and what he expects to see from the Edinburgh winger:

"We expect him to play his best rugby. We want to see Duhan's strengths.

"We've got to make sure he gets opportunities to run. When he's done that for us in the past for us, he's done really well.

  4. 'Not about predictions and previous form'published at 13:19 GMT 19 February

Are Scotland clear favourites heading to Cardiff?

"I'm sure last week lots of people thought England were clear favourites," Townsend said.

"It's not about predictions and previous form - it's about what you do in the 80 minutes.

"We have to make sure we get our game out, our aggression, our energy, producing quick ball and getting the ball into space."

  5. 'Only as good as your next game'published at 13:16 GMT 19 February

When asked about the criticism that followed the Italy loss and the acclaim that followed the England win, Townsend said: "They are not things I focus my time on.

"I've enjoyed being in Spain this week with the players, it's been great we came here after a win and it's been a good training week. Vitamin D helps with the soul.

"We want to show our fitness and conditioning in what will be a tough atmosphere and a tough game.

"You're only as good as your next game and that's what we look forward to. Our players are keen to go again."

  6. Postpublished at 13:13 GMT 19 February

Townsend was asked if his plan is to blitz Wales with pace and power:

"The plan is to play our game," he said. "We've got to adjust our game to what's working.

"We can be physical, move the ball to width and also use our kicking game effectively. We also have to work out what the opposition are doing - we have to deal with their threats.

"It's a 23-man game. We're pleased with the starters we're putting out, but also the impact the guys on the bench can make."

  7. Wales will be 'highly motivated'published at 13:09 GMT 19 February

On Wales, Townsend says: "They will be highly motivated and play with a lot of passion.

"They will have taken learnings from those defeats. They played very tough teams.

"The atmosphere is always one of the noisiest in the championship and I'm sure they will be playing their best rugby again. That's the challenge we are preparing for."

  8. Kinghorn & Van der Merwe will bring 'freshness'published at 13:06 GMT 19 February

Gregor Townsend starts by talking about the returning Blair Kinghorn and Duhan van der Merwe:

"Blair was back playing on Sunday night for Toulouse and played really well. He's recovered quickly and Duhan has trained really well.

"There will be a freshness around both of them and a huge determination to do well.

"It will have been tough for them to take, but they backed the team and understood the reasons why we had different selections in the first two games.

"Now they have an opportunity to represent their country again."

Selection mostly makes sense. Jordan has been poor/anonymous at fullback in the last couple of games, so good to see Kinghorn back (whatever the reasons were for GT excluding him from the 23 in the first place). Bench looks more sensible without the wasted space for Hastings, but it’s a pity there isn’t a place for Freddy Douglas to wreak his havoc!

I have a feeling Duhan might run riot in this game. My prediction is that he will score 3 tries minimum. Good to see Blair Kinghorn back aswell and with Tom Jordan coming of the bench it can only be good imo.

  13. Scotland's depth is decent and they need to kick on nowpublished at 12:46 GMT 19 February

    Tom English

That's a really good Scotland team.

I thought Grant Gilchrist was going to come back in but if you're putting Gregor Brown to six then Max Williamson is the coming man in the second row. Huge man, huge talent.

Consider the guys who are not in this 23 for one reason or another - Jamie Dobie, Kyle Rowe, Ollie Smith, Stafford McDowall, Rory Hutchinson, Cam Redpath, Arron Reed, Adam Hastings, Fergus Burke, Rory Sutherland, Ewan Ashman, Gregor Hiddleston, D'Arcy Rae, Alex Samuel, Alex Craig, Jonny Gray, Cam Henderson, Andy Onyeama-Christie, Freddy Douglas, Jamie Ritchie, Liam McConnell, Jack Dempsey, Magnus Bradbury.

Might have missed one or two. Healthy amount of depth in most areas.

“Like the look of this team. Go to it Scotland!”

Everyone always likes the look of Scotland on paper! (That has been their biggest problem!)

Wales head coach Steve Tandy on the changes to his team: "It's a new format with three games in three weeks and a six-day turnaround, plus looking at Scotland.

"Ellis Mee is okay (fitness) and has done well but we feel Gabriel Hamer-Webb adds something to the group for Scotland. The way he has trained and performed for Leicester has been outstanding.

"Sam Costelow has really responded to not being involved in the autumn. Dan Edwards has done well but with a six-day turnaround it's a good opportunity to freshen the team up.

"The way that Sam has attacked the games, he's a really good all-round footballer."

  16. Costelow and Hamer-Webb start for Wales v Scotlandpublished at 12:38 GMT 19 February

Uncapped Leicester wing Gabriel Hamer-Webb will make his Wales debut in Saturday's Six Nations game against Scotland in Cardiff.

Wales head coach Steve Tandy has also brought back Scarlets fly-half Sam Costelow and given starts to Dragons lock Ben Carter and Scarlets flanker Taine Plumtree in four changes from the team that lost 54-12 to France.

There is also a positional switch with Aaron Wainwright moving from blind-side flanker to number eight.

Wing Ellis Mee, fly-half Dan Edwards, lock Adam Beard and number eight Olly Cracknell drop out of the squad.

Gloucester lock Freddie Thomas, Cardiff flanker James Botham and Scarlets full-back Blair Murray come onto the replacements bench for the first time in the tournament.

  17. Wales team to face Scotlandpublished at 12:35 GMT 19 February

Wales: Rees-Zammit; Hamer-Webb, James, Hawkins, Adams; Costelow, T Williams; Carre, Lake (capt), Francis, Jenkins, Carter, Plumtree, Mann, Wainwright.

Replacements: Elias, Smith, Griffin, F Thomas, Botham, Hardy, J Evans, Murray.

  19. Scotland show their depthpublished at 12:29 GMT 19 February

    Andy Burke

Not so long ago the loss of three key players would have been ruinous to Scotland's hopes in the Six Nations.

The loss of Jamie Ritchie, Jack Dempsey and Jamie Dobie is undoubtedly a huge blow, especially given how all three performed against England, but the quality of the replacements speak to a squad depth better than anything Scotland have had before.

To be able to recall two British and Irish Lions, Blair Kinghorn and Duhan van der Merwe, to the back three while leaving another Lion, Darcy Graham, on the bench demonstrates just how well stocked Scotland are in that area.

'Smart selection' or 'defensively frail'? - get involvedpublished at 12:25 GMT 19 February

As a Welshman happy to see Darcy benched and Duhan starting... I still expect Scotland to win by at least 10 points, though.

    J in Cardiff

Not happy about DVM and Kinghorn being brought back in. We know what they offer in attack but it is their defensive frailties that really concern me. Why change a sound FB in Jordan.

    Darwin

It’s a smart selection. Kinghorn and DVDM will be hungry and the gauntlet has been thrown down to say perform and you are in the mix for France and Ireland otherwise we revert back. The scrum needs to stand up as it’s been a weakness that Wales can exploit
