Toulon have won three Champions Cups and one Challenge Cup (against Glasgow in the final). Those were the galactico years. Of the sixty players who started the four finals have a guess how many Frenchmen were included? Answer is 17. Two of the Champions Cup wins had just three homegrown players in the starting line-up. Not exactly the Franco Smith over there in their heyday.

As well as Ben White, there's another familiar Scottish face roaming the Scotstoun pitch ahead of kick-off.

Richie Gray - the Gala born coach, not the former Scotland lock - is part of Toulon's backroom team.

A beloved ex-BBC Radio Scotland pundit, the specialist breakdown coach had spells with the Scotland and South Africa coaching teams.

Today he is plotting the downfall of his countrymen.

Dry but breezy day at Scotstoun - which is a whole lot better than it was a week ago against the Bulls. Everybody has been marvelling at Glasgow this season, not just the Warriors fans. The quality of their rugby has endeared them to many outside Scotland (maybe not in Leinster). They're hot favourites to win. Toulon have a terrible away record this season and Glasgow have been utterly brilliant at home. It's a tribute to the work that Franco Smith has done that he's picked a really strong 23 despite, through injury or just selection, not having George Horne, Kyle Rowe, Jame Dobie, Rory Sutherland, Scott Cummings, Gregor Brown and Alex Craig. He's now without Max Williamson, too. The lock was on the bench but he's now out.

  8. Warriors look to avenge Dublin drubbingpublished at 14:51 BST 11 April

    Glasgow Warriors v Toulon (15:00)

The last time Glasgow and Toulon met in European competition, it was a painful experience for the Warriors.

In his first season in charge, Franco Smith guided Glasgow to the 2023 Challenge Cup final in Dublin. The dream of a first European trophy in the club's history quickly turned into a nightmare as the French giants crushed the Scots in a 43-19 victory.

Smith has since cited that experience as an important moment for his Glasgow side as they went on to win the URC title one year later.

Head coach Franco Smith has made two changes to the starting Glasgow side who beat the Bulls in last weekend's quarter-final.

George Horne misses out after failing to recover from an ankle injury suffered against the Bulls, with Ben Afshar starting at scrum-half. Jack Oliver is the back-up nine and could make his first Champions Cup appearance from the bench.

Jare Oguntibeju comes into the second row to partner Alex Samuel. Max Williamson was named among the replacements but has failed a late fitness test so Mackenzie Duncan is brought onto the bench.

Stafford McDowall's excellent performance against the Bulls sees him retain the 13 jersey. Huw Jones, who will join Toulon this summer, is once again left out of the matchday 23.

Scotland international Ben White starts at scrum-half for Toulon, with Italy centre Nacho Brex and former France full-back Mervyn Jaminet also named in the back-line.

Former England and Lions prop Kyle Sinckler and France back-row Charles Ollivon feature in a heavyweight forward pack.

Glasgow Warriors: Schickerling, Hiddleston, Fagerson, Oguntibeju, Samuel, Fagerson, Darge, Dempsey, Afshar, Lancaster, Smith, Tuipulotu, McDowall, Steyn (c), McKay.

Replacements: Stephen, Bhatti, Talakai, Duncan, Ferrie, Fraser, Oliver, Hastings.

Toulon: Gros, Baubigny, Sinckler, Mezou, Ribbans (c), Kpoku, Ollivon, Shioshvili; White, Albornoz, Tuicuvu, Sinzelle, Brex, Drean, Jaminet.

Replacements: Lucchesi, Brennan, Gigashvili, Halagahu, Mercer, Serin, Abadie, Ferte.

What a Champions Cup showdown we have in store at Scotstoun.

Glasgow Warriors are having one helluva season. Riding high at the top of the United Rugby Championship, they also qualified for the Champions Cup quarter-finals as second seeds after taking maximum points from their four pool matches, including stunning victories over Toulouse and Saracens.

Warriors have reached this stage on three previous occasions, suffering heavy defeats to Saracens in 2017 and 2019 and a thrashing at the hands of Leinster last season.

This time they have the advantage of playing their last-eight tie against Toulon at Scotstoun as they attempt to reach the Champions Cup semi-finals for the first time. They have made their home ground a fortress and have not lost a game on their own patch in over a year.
