Farrell on the younger players: "People need to step up and show them the way of what it takes to be an Ireland international.

"It is up to everyone in the room, especially the experienced guys, to show the way because if that is shown to them in the right way they will follow that."

Farrell on Italy: "They have certainly got threats individually across the field.

"Powerful men ball who take some managing. I think the real threat is the collective as a team. They play great rugby ball in hand, everyone is on the same page, and their set pieces have vastly improved

"There is a real fight to Italy and the results in the not too distant history shows they are able to win big games and this is a big game for us because of that."

Farrell on what went wrong against France: "The game, no matter how you try to shape it, is a confrontational game and our intent within the game wasn't where we needed it to be with a game like that."

  5. Postpublished at 16:25 GMT 12 February

Ireland v Italy (Sat, 14:10 GMT)

Farrell on Edwin Edogbo: "I mean, what a story

"If you look at the story is phenomenal and to celebrate that with his family tonight is going to be a joy for all of us.

"Everyone has talked his potential but again I would like to say that he is young as far as this type of big game experience, even at Munster.

"It is potential at this moment of time to give those sorts of players an opportunity. It is going to be what he needs to kick on with his game. We are excited about that."

Farrell on Cormac Izuchukwu: "A bit like Rob, but not as severe, and is someone we have earmarked for quite some time now.

"We have tried to give him game time, but it has been stop-start with injuries and he has been back in camp for a couple of weeks.

"Another nine days in the camp, they will be able to rip in against Italy."

On dropping Michael Milne from the squad for Tom O'Toole: "We feel that Tom has played really well this year. We've tried to get him going at loosehead before and it's something we're keen to do. Tom is a strong character within the group and we need characters to make the dressing room feel right, so he gets his chance this week."

  8. Baloucoune's 'sheer pace' excitingpublished at 16:19 GMT 12 February

Ireland v Italy (Sat, 14:10 GMT)

Farrell on Robert Baloucoune: "The sheer pace that he is got is exciting to everyone, everyone loves a bit of pace within the side.

"It has been a bit stop-start for him. You will remember him playing in a big game against South Africa and it has been a bit stop-start with injuries.

"Since coming in for his international career, he has learned a lot about himself and his game has certainly come on.

"For example, he is a great defensive winger, he has gotten a much better understanding of how to get himself in the game from his wing and he can break a tackle. He is not just quick, he can offload the ball.

"Things are getting better as far as that is concerned, he just needs an opportunity to do it again on the big stage."

Ireland v Italy (Sat, 14:10 GMT)

Farrell on if he is expecting a response against Italy: "There is no doubt about that.

"I think we always discuss how we want it to look on Friday morning. You don't want any regrets and we had a few after that game [against France]. To get back on the horse is at the forefront."

Ireland v Italy (Sat, 14:10 GMT)

Farrell on how the side need to grow: "The trajectory of every team is always learning and there is good and bad in that.

"This type of experience, it is never nice first game up, and to come second best by quite a stretch.

"It is how we bounce back and move on from that.

"These experiences are going to continue to happen, but I believe [with] the squad and the wider squad we have it'll stand us in good stead."

  11. 'Until you get a smack in the face'published at 16:07 GMT 12 February

Ireland v Italy (Sat, 14:10 GMT)

Farrell on what they looked at during the week: "We're very happy because nobody was holding back. There was a lot of honesty and no excuses. We tried to get back to simplifying things down and to understand what we stand for as a team.

"You always think that preparations are going right, but until you get a smack in the face like we did in Paris then you find out about yourselves. The good thing thing is nine days later we get anther crack at it."

  12. 'The team excites us'published at 16:02 GMT 12 February

Ireland v Italy (Sat, 14:10 GMT)

Andy Farrell on making six changes: "The team that we've picked excites us. It's the right one for this weekend for a number of reasons. We're trying to give people a chance to show what they've got. It's a very good Italian side.

On discussions on how they responded from last week: "A lot of it is private enough, but as you can imagine with the people we've got there has been a lot of honesty. There was a bit of soul searching. We've addressed all that and got back on the horse. We're at the business end of the week now."

Patrick: Would've liked to have seen Edogbo and Timoney start...the latter definitely deserves a test start. B. Ward is some prospect too- was hoping he'd sneak a spot on the bench. To me, James Ryan is a liability so disappointing to see him promoted from the bench.
