In the Six Nations we spoke about performances getting better and then we beat Italy on the final game.

Today we play Fiji, although it's their home game, we are playing in Cardiff and I think we have to win today.

There's two tough games coming up next so we need a win

Irish referee Eoghan Cross will be calling the shots this afternoon.

He made his international debut last November when in charge of South Africa against Japan, while he was also the ref for Cardiff's United Rugby Championship quarter-final defeat by Stormers in Cape Town last month.

The Munsterman will be helped by assistants Matthew Carley and Hollie Davidson from England and Scotland.

Ireland's Leo Colgan is TMO and Scotland's Mike Adamson is the foul play review official.

I'm pretty happy with the pack this afternoon.

I think Ben Carter was the find of the Six Nations as a second row, he did a very good job.

We are forgetting that Adam Beard is a British and Irish Lion and a 70-cap international so I'm pretty confident that the pack are going to deliver today.

Wales are looking to win back-to-back Tests for the first time since the 2023 World Cup after they impressively beat Italy in the last round of the Six Nations.

It would be a hat-trick of victories after Steve Tandy's men enjoyed a useful hit-out against the Barbarians at Twickenham last week.

They were a bit rusty but still ran out 33-31 winners in a game notable for George North's double - and conversion - on his last game as a professional.

The Wales-based members of Tandy's squad had not played since May and the head coach sticks with nine of the starters.

Blair Murray is rewarded for a strong showing with the 15 jersey this afternoon while Wales will need Aaron Wainwright to be at his best.

The number eight was man of the match against Italy and also won the honour at Allianz Stadium.

  7. Big lock losspublished at 14:00 BST 4 July

Wales have been dealt a huge blow with the loss of lock Dafydd Jenkins, who needs surgery after a shoulder injury suffered in Exeter's Prem final defeat by Northampton.

The workaholic forward will miss the summer Tests with the hope that he will be able to return early in Chiefs' 2026-27 campaign.

Jenkins and Ben Carter formed a strong partnership at the end of the Six Nations but the injury has led to a return for Adam Beard, who has got the nod ahead of Teddy Williams.

While Wales were making their way back from London last Saturday, Beard was in action for Montpellier in the final of the Top 14.

He came off the bench for the Challenge Cup winners in Paris and had to settle for being runners-up.

Nobody questions his quality in stopping the maul but Wales will miss Jenkins' energy and dynamism around the park.

Steve Tandy opted to go with three locks in his summer squad and this afternoon the cover will be provided by Taine Plumtree, a back-row forward by trade.

Wales will hope that there is not an early injury.

With the likes of Dewi Lake and Jac Morgan to add into that, there's a brilliant opportunity for us this afternoon.

Fiji boast serious strike power in back three that all play in France.

Lyon wing Jiuta Wainiqolo, Bordeaux-Begles full-back Salesi Ravasi and Racing 92 wing Selestino Ravutaumada have scored a combined tally of 39 tries this season.

Wales have switched it up after fielding Louis Rees-Zammit at 15 throughout the Six Nations.

He returned to wing with Bristol and slots in down the right with Josh Adams on the left and Blair Murray, who was lively against the Baa-Baas, at full-back.

"Zammo's enjoyed playing full-back, but he does love the wing a bit more," said head coach Steve Tandy.

"He's really open to playing full-back, but Blair's done really well and responded to the Six Nations.

"We've got flexibility, but also a bit of depth, so we can move things around, which is exciting."

I like the new format, and I think it’s a good idea.

It keeps interest in the summer games. We need to make sure that we take it seriously to be in a good place ready for the autumn.

The players have been through a lot over the last few years.

From what I can understand the protest hasn’t affected any preparations. It looks like they just needed to go into a room and get it sorted and it’s been done.

It is just a shame that we’ve come into a Test week without it sorted. Hopefully we learn from this going forward.

Wales edged out Fiji in a thriller at the 2023 World Cup, when Semi Radradra failed to cleanly gather a pass with the line at his mercy, but lost the last meeting between the sides.

The Fijians travelled to Cardiff for the opening game of the 2024 autumn internationals and took the spoils 24-19.

Fly-half Caleb Muntz scored 19 points in what was Wales’ first home loss to Fiji as they hit double figures for consecutive defeats.

Warren Gatland’s men went on to lose heavily to both Australia and South Africa in a grim campaign.

Sadly, but not surprisingly, there was more off-field drama in Wales this week with a dispute between the squad and the Welsh Rugby Union (WRU) over match fees.

It eventually got sorted late on Wednesday afternoon but only after talks between the governing body and the Welsh Rugby Players' Association.

The Wales squad cancelled a planned media conference because of the saga along with interviews with broadcaster S4C.

Steve Tandy insisted that the training schedule was not impacted but it was another distraction for players who have had to deal with so much nonsense in recent years.

Wales played the Baa-Baas at a sparse Twickenham last week and now take to the field at the home of Cardiff City.

Fiji will be in the Bluebirds' changing room because they are the home team for the fixture in the Welsh capital.

No games are being played in Fiji during the Nations Championship and they will take on England at Everton's stadium in Liverpool and Scotland at Murrayfield in Edinburgh.

Read about the reasons for that here.

This is a ground that was home to Cardiff's rugby side, who were called Blues at the time, for three seasons from 2009.

Rugby was played here during the Covid pandemic and it has hosted the regional double-header Judgement Day and the European Challenge Cup final.

Wales have opted to move Louis Rees-Zammit to wing after he featured at full-back in the Six Nations.

Blair Murray, lively in victory against Barbarians last week, is given the 15 jersey with Rees-Zammit lining up on the right after returning to wing with Bristol.

Wales head coach Steve Tandy has made six changes from the side that defeated the Baa-Baas 33-31 in an uncapped international.

Rees-Zammit, scrum-half Tomos Williams, prop Rhys Carre and lock Adam Beard return after being unavailable because they play for English or French clubs.

Josh Adams and Alex Mann sat out the Twickenham game but the Cardiff pair return at wing and blind-side flanker respectively.

Taine Plumtree drops to the replacements bench and will cover the lock position while Ospreys tight-head prop Ben Warren is set for his first cap.

Wales: Murray; Rees-Zammit, James, Hawkins, Adams; Edwards, Tomos Williams; Carre, Lake (capt), Lewis, Carter, Beard, Mann, Morgan, Wainwright.

Replacements: Elias, Smith, Warren, Plumtree, Botham, Hardy, Costelow, Mee.

Eight of Fiji's starting line-up play in England or France but they are without fly-half Caleb Muntz, who scored 19 points in a 24-19 victory in Cardiff two years ago.

He has only just linked up with the squad, so Drua's Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula starts at 10.

The 'hosts' have a formidable midfield partnership of Semi Radradra and Josua Tuisova.

Plenty of danger for Wales in the back three of Bordeaux-Begles’ Salesi Rayasi, Racing 92’s Selestino Ravutaumada and Lyon’s Jiuta Wainiqolo.

Fiji: Rayasi; Ravutamada, Radradra, Tuisova, Wainiqolo; Armstrong-Ravula, Lomani; Mawi, Ikanivere (capt), Hoyt, Nasilasila, Mayanavanua, Sowakula, Salawa, Canakaivata.

Replacements: Togiatama, Natave, Ravai, Vocevoce, Yato, Kuruvoli, Botitu, Ravouvou.
