While the players take a breather in Salford, let's look at what else is going on in the tournament today.

The first game of this double-header was sadly a mismatch with Australia thrashing Samoa 73-0, scoring 11 tries. It was the Wallaroos' largest winning margin in a World Cup game.

The other game in Pool B is after this finishes with Canada, ranked second in the world, taking on Fiji in York (17:30 BST).

France and Italy are in Exeter with that clash between Six Nations rivals (20:15 BST) in Pool D, which also features South Africa and Brazil.

It is disappointing. Wales came into this match with the set-piece and physically they probably had the edge on Scotland.

But Scotland have turned up and found the edges very easy, way too easy.

Hosts England got the tournament under way in style last night, running 11 tries past the United States in Sunderland.

The Red Roses delighted a record crowd of 42,723 by powering past the Eagles, who are ranked 10th in the world.

It was a statement of intent by the hosts, who are desperate to go one better than in New Zealand at the last World Cup.

England led 28-7 at the break and put their foot down after the break with classy Ellie Kildunne scoring two tries and setting up a cracker for Jess Breach.

Scotland have absolutely been the better side this first half. The stats are quite telling.

Maybe Wales have been a bit soft in the contact area.

Wow, that was a frantic first half and Scotland have the edge thanks to their strike runners.

Their back three has been electric and Wales have paid the price for missed tackles.

The Scots have a handy lead in what is a crucial opener - arguably a shoot-out to join Canada in the quarter-finals - but Wales won't go away.

It look like Scotland are using the off the pitch emotion to fuel themselves instead of hinder themselves.

Scotland have done well to negate Wales' threats, and they're playing with so much variety, it's great to see.

The clock is in the red but Wales have one last chance to cut the gap with a scrum on the 22.

Scotland defend strongly and the eighth phase ends with Courtney Keight being tackled over the right touchline.

The Scots have the edge at the break but, as expected, it's a tight tussle.

A chip and gather by Nel Metcalfe - a great spot - puts Wales into the 22 and they win a penalty.

Wales opt to go for the corner rather than reduce the gap but the call doesn't pay off this time. They are penalised for being in front of the ball carrier from a fancy move.

Worryingly for Wales, Scotland's off-field troubles have appeared to galvanise them.

They are playing with more tempo, intent and are completely deserving of their lead.

Wales are looking a little sluggish off the line and allowing Scotland's powerful backs to run at them, which they will happily do all afternoon.

It's so important they don't concede again this half or it will be a steep mountain to climb.

This is a breathless game, going from end to end.

Wales break clear down their right after a clever bit of work from a line-out with Olympian Jasmine Joyce running away.

Fair play to the Scotland defence, they scramble to win a timely penalty.

That is followed by a water break, 13 minutes left of an engrossing first half.

Fran McGhie joked in her press conference on Thursday that having transitioned from ballet dancing, she probably didn’t even know how to play rugby when she made her Scotland debut.

She seems to have picked it up pretty quickly!

They put the pressure on to win another penalty and this time point to the posts.
