Ole Einar Bjoerndalen is currently fourth, with Martin Fourcade, the World Cup leader, leading the race and preparing for the third shoot. The stands are jam-packed and all sorts of national flags are being waved as the leaders - Fourcade, Dominik Landertinger and Jaroslav Soukup - make their way to the Biathlon Centre.

The biathlon is under way and history could be made today as Ole Einar Bjorndalen is bidding to become the first athlete to win 13 Winter Olympic medals. The sprint gold medallist set off first in the 12.5km pursuit and will secure gold should no-one overtake him. The 40-year-old's closest rival is likely to be Austria's Dominik Landertinger, who began a second behind him, while World Cup leader Martin Fourcade of France has a handicap of 12 seconds to make up.

"France's British-born Ben Cavet is in a spot of bother after landing his first jump and takes a few seconds to compose himself before putting in a decent set of turns mid run. He pulled out of the second jump too but will have another chance to qualify later.

'Not too good. I had trouble going over the top jump. My feet got stuck because the snow is quite sticky," he told me. 'It's a pretty tough course, there are a lot of changes in the rhythm. There some long bumps, some tight bumps.

"I had good training this afternoon so it should go well. I'm hoping for a top 10."

Russia have submitted an official written appeal against the result of the men's skiathlon on Sunday, a race in which their skier Maxim Vylegzhanin finished in fourth place.

The 31-year-old Russian missed out on the bronze medal following an "infraction of the corridor rules" by Martin Johnsrud Sundby of Norway.

The Norwegian was given a written reprimand from the International Ski Federation (FIS) following an initial protest on Sunday by the Russian team. The FIS have up to 72 hours to consider Russia's appeal.

The first run in the women's luge singles is underway at the Sanki Sliding Centre with Germany's Natalie Geisenberger, the world champion and second woman out on the course setting the pace. Geisenberger, the bronze medallist from Vancouver clocked 49.891 for a new track record, and that time will take some beating, but there are still 29 other women still to go.

There's a lot of falling, bouncing bodies and flailing arms in the moguls at the moment with skiers taking risks in this first qualifying run. That's because they'll all have a second run in which to reach the final, which start at 18:00 GMT.

Tina Weirather, one of the leading medal contenders in the downhill, is a doubt for Wednesday's race after injuring a leg in training at the weekend. The Liechtenstein skier, whose mother Hanni Wenzel won double gold at the 1980 Winter Olympics, badly bruised her right leg and is receiving intensive therapy in a bid to be fit.

Excellent ski from defending champion Alex Bilodeau, who sails to the top of the scoreboard with a score of 24.70, one point clear of the field. His compatriot Mikael Kingsbury, 21, is second overall, with Russian Alexandr Smyshlyaev third.

Earlier this morning, Team GB's women's curling team began their Olympic campaign with a 6-4 defeat by European champions Sweden.

Skip Eve Muirhead said: "It is always disappointing to lose the first match. It was always going to be a tough one anyway, playing the European champions and world runners-up. They are one of the favourites but the game could have gone either way.

"I think we played well in the middle half of the game and if we can take that to the next game - and the next game is a new one - we will definitely step it up."
