"We had really kept them under pressure then we were hanging on at the end. We knew we had to defend in the last six or seven minutes and we will have to glue everyone back together and see how we shape up for next week

"Peter O'Mahony was superb. We gave up a couple penalties but they got less of them and we were very good at the breakdown and that allowed us to maintain the pressure we let slip last week."

Ireland head coach Joe Schmidt, speaking to Sky Sports: "We made it far too easy for Kurtley Beale to score under the sticks from the start but from that moment on we knuckled down and worked into the game. We scored a great try and that boosted our confidence. We accumulated points like we didn't last week. The third quarter was probably the turning point of the game."

Ireland prop Tadhg Furlong, speaking to Sky Sports: "It was a tough game, it was scrappy in the first half and it was incredibly physical throughout.

"But we had a lot of ball and a lot of territory that we didn't convert, so credit to the Australians for their defence.

"We probably held onto the ball a bit better than them and I felt our penalty count was a bit lower than last week.

"We're delighted with the win and it sets up a huge game next week - it's the series decider - a big game for both teams.

"The crowds have been amazing and I know there's a lot of Irish in Sydney, so it should be good, we're looking forward to it again."
