"Players will and should be taking medical advice from the appropriate medical staff at their individual clubs together with the Governments national advice at this time. It is important to stress that this is a public health issue, not just football but the wider community, and that should be on the forefront of everybody’s minds when making decisions."

A FIGC statement confirmed , externalthat Serie A would stop until 3 April following a government decree issued on Monday.

FIGC president Gabriele Gravina also put forward alternative options if the season can not be concluded.

They include staging play-offs, not having a champion for 2019-20 or declaring the current standings final.

Play-offs would take place to determine the champions, European qualification and the three clubs to be relegated to Serie B.

But if the title winner is decided by the current standings then Juventus would be Italian champions for a ninth straight season, having gone back above Lazio with a 2-0 win over third-placed Inter Milan on Sunday.

What should the football governing bodies do about coronavirus?

Ryan Williams: If we have to play out the rest of the season behind closed doors, why not provide ticket holders with an online stream through the clubs official site? Clubs get revenue & fans get to watch their club. Not ideal but a solution. Matches are streamed globally anyway.

John Rushton: Silver linings time. With all this coronavirus discussion at least we're not talking about VAR? But seriously, health and wellbeing are the most important things.

Rayan Mount: All these fuss and measures are to protect the fans, but what about the players? It seems no one cares.

What should the footballing authorities do about coronavirus?

Arasa Gooner: Without the fans there is no fun in playing football. The hot atmosphere is what makes it interesting to watch those games. But health comes first. Stop all sporting events as we all wait for the all clear from the medics.

David: I don't understand. How can Arsenal's game against City be postponed and Brighton going ahead? We only found out yesterday that the Olympiakos president only found out he had CV yesterday, so how long Arsenal players self isolating for?

Rob Stenton: Wouldn't it make sense to cancel the Euros and then free up time for all the leagues to finish if games need to be postponed.

What should football's governing bodies do about coronavirus?

Tim Goodwin: Postponing would be a better idea as what if a player gets the virus, then the whole team is in lockdown and the risk of spread increases.

Michal Koziol: Play behind closed doors. Can you imagine living without football for a few months? And how it would disrupt everything, this season, the transfer window, everything? I'd say majority of fans would rather watch on tv than not at all.

Daryl Wing: Clubs rely on income generated from match days, and what happens when an entire team is struck down with #COVID19, external? We know the Euros are coming, but who's to say that the tournament will go ahead? Postpone.

  18. Team news - Alisson out, but Henderson availablepublished at 09:37 GMT 11 March 2020

Liverpool v Atletico Madrid (20:00 GMT, 0-1 after first leg)

Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson is fit to return for their Champions League last 16 second leg with Atletico Madrid at Anfield. The midfielder has not played since suffering a hamstring injury in the first leg - which Atletico won 1-0.

Goalkeeper Alisson is out with a hip injury for the defending champions.

"Not a lot of the Atletico players have played at Anfield before and that is what we want to use," explained Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp. "Our crowd will be our advantage and we have to use it with the performance on the pitch.

"It has to be exceptional because they defend deep and have counter-attack threat. Each player can be dangerous. I have the highest respect for them but there are always ways and we have to find them. We have to show we have really learned from the first game."

Liverpool seem human - knocked out of the FA Cup and a loss to Watford.

Atleti have Joao Felix, he's playing well, they have no problems with injuries and they look more solid.

The only doubt is Alvaro Morata, the former Chelsea player, but Diego Simmoene says he will be fit.

They just need to score one goal and then Atleti can defend for their lives.
