  • West Brom ended 20-game winless run last week with victory over Brighton

    Everton 0-1 West Brom

Everton's defenders are caught on their heels again as Salomon Rondon runs at them, then plays a ball wide to Chris Brunt, The Northern Ireland international is trying to cross from the right towards Jay Rodriguez, but the ball almost veers in at the far post with Jordan Pickford at full stretch. Brunt hasn't scored in almost a year. That would have ben some way to end the sequence.

  2. Postpublished at 18 mins

    Everton 0-1 West Brom

Gylfi Sigurdsson's free-kick is glanced across goal, a flurry of pressure follows, but Everton can't threaten the goal. In the end, the ball comes back to Sigurdsson, at an angle around eight yards from goal, but he is closed out before he can test Ben Foster.

    Everton 0-1 West Brom

Theo Walcott, a peripheral figure so far, makes a dart for the corner. He's not realy going anywhere, but wins a free-kick for Everton as Salomon Rondon bundles him over.

    Everton 0-1 West Brom

Just checking my live feed of Opta stats, and it appears that Sigurdsson effort does not count as a shot on target. So it's four shots on target for Everton in around 465 minutes of Premier League football.

  5. Postpublished at 13 mins

    Everton 0-1 West Brom

Everton's attacking passes aren't finding their targets at the moment, and West Bromn's defence looks VERY well drilled. However, there is a glimmer for the home side as Nikola Vlasic heads down for Gylfi Sigurdsson just inside the area. The shot is blocked by Jonny Evans, and there are muted handball appeals, which are rejected by referee Stuart Attwell. Looks ball to hand on second inspection.

    Everton 0-1 West Brom

Just before that goal, Theo Walcott made his first contribution, energetically rushing in to cut off a telegraphed Ahmed Hegazi pass out of defence. It was an act that won applause from the Everton fans, but the Goodison mood has dipped now.

It was only a brief respite for Sam Allardyce's team. From their very next attack, the visitors score. Salomon Rondon controls on the chest in the centre circle, and feeds Gzregorz Krychowiak, who turns into the path of the onrushing Jay Rodriguez. What on earth Everton's centre backs are doing, I am not sure. Rodriguez does not hang about to ponder the issue, driving his shot into the corner.

Good chance for West Brom on the break. Matt Phillips turns the ball into the path of Grzegorz Krychowiak on the run, but he fires over...

  9. Postpublished at 4 mins

    Everton 0-0 West Brom

West Brom are actually showing a touch of adventure in the early stages. Everton's debutant Theo Walcott hasn't seen much of the ball yet - but it's a big chance for him to impress today, with England manager Gareth Southagte watching from the stand.

  10. Postpublished at 2 mins

    Everton 0-0 West Brom

An early mistake in Everton's defence gives West Brom striker Salomon Rondon a chance to shoot for goal from distance. Keeper Jordan Pickford holds comfortably.

There are chants of 'There's only one Cyrille Regis' from the away section.

    Match of the Day commentator

For those of us who had the misfortune to witness the drab goalless draw when these sides met at The Hawthorns on Boxing Day I sincerely hope there's a significant upgrade in quality this time around.

Everton were poor that day and haven't picked up a point since. The goals have dried up too, hence the arrival of Theo Walcott hot-on-the-heels of Turkey international Cenk Tosun.

Victory over Brighton finally ended Albion's five-month wait for a Premier League win. If they repeat that success at Goodison they could climb out of the relegation zone.

  12. KICK-OFFpublished at 15:00 GMT 20 January 2018

Referee Stuart Attwell gets us under way. Everton are in blue, and Theo Walcott kicks off as the home side attack the Gwladys Street End in the first half. West Brom are in their change strip of white shirts and red shorts.

Everton v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

Regis was described by Albion this week as a "pioneer". He was among the first generation of black footballers in England, and as he made his way in the late 1970s, had to deal with significant racist abuse. It was a tribute to his character that he still managed to thrive and become one of the club's greatest players.

If you get the chance, seek out the highlights of West Brom's 5-3 victory at Manchester United in 1978. It was an astonishing performance, by a wonderful team, and Regis was pivotal. Even if you've seen the game before, watch it again. You won't be disappointed.

Before kick-off, there will be a minute's applause in honour of Albion icon Cyrille Regis, who died earlier this week, aged just 59. My God, what a player he was. Here he is winning the BBC's Goal of the Season award with a cracker for West Brom against Norwich in 1982.

Theo Walcott probably should have left Arsenal two years ago. He’s gone a bit stale and some players do need that move to reignite their career. He will inject some pace into an Everton side which has lacked a bit of speed and his runs should be perfect for Sigurdsson and Rooney to pick out. I think it's a good move all round.

  18. 1,000 up for Allardycepublished at 14:45 GMT 20 January 2018

Everton v West Brom (15:00 GMT)

As mentioned at the start, today is officially Sam Allardyce's 1,000th game as a manager - although he is claiming a few more than that. When the League Managers' Association totted up his total, it omitted his spell in charge of League of Ireland side Limerick in the early 1990s.

"I actually thought I was already there when I left Crystal Palace because, if you counted Limerick, I was well past 1,000 games, but unfortunately those games weren't added because it wasn't a full-time professional football club," said Allardyce yesterday.

So the landmark comes up today - against West Brom, the club where Allardyce worked as a player-coach at the tail-end of the 1980s. We have the photo to prove it.

This season, West Brom have beaten all three Premier League teams beginning with the letter 'B' - Bournemouth, Burnley and Brighton. Unfortunately for them, they haven't beaten anyone else in the top flight. If only they could persuade Everton to change their name to 'Big Sam's team'.
