The relegation battle was effectively decided when Birmingham won 3-0 at Bristol Academy.

A 6-1 loss at Manchester City later in the month confirmed Bristol's relegation to Women's Super League Two.

Surprise package Sunderland, and later Arsenal, were eventually ruled out of the title race.

Meanwhile, Chelsea were clinical in a 4-0 win at Liverpool that saw them take a two-point lead into the final day of the season.

Thanks largely to the red-hot form of England striker Toni Duggan, Manchester City marched up the table with a string of wins.

City continued their excellent form until letting a two-goal lead slip in the final stages of their game at Notts County. Arguably, it is those two points that separate City and leaders Chelsea as things stand today.

Meanwhile, Chelsea showed their class with a 2-0 away win in a crucial London derby against Arsenal, at a time when the Gunners had been serious contenders for the title.

When domestic matters took centre stage again after the Women's World Cup, record crowds were seen across the Women's Super League.

Chelsea's unbeaten start to the season ended in surprising circumstances, as in-form Sunderland striker Beth Mead hit a hat-trick in a 4-0 win that defied the form that the leaders had shown up until then.

Chelsea would go on to lose a second consecutive league game, this time to a revived Manchester City, as Steph Houghton's last-gasp free-kick was deflected in off the unfortunate Claire Rafferty to snatch a 2-1 win for City.

Could that moment prove pivotal this evening?

Women's Super League One action took a nine-week break for the Women's World Cup.

As it turned out, it was a pretty glorious affair for the Lionesses as England returned from Canada with a bronze medal in what was the nation's best ever finish at the tournament.

On the domestic front, attention would be intensified and crowd numbers rise to all-time highs because of those exploits.

And for the second successive season, the mid-season break would have a major factor in the title race as a Manchester City side struggling to keep pace were to be rejuvenated...

Birmingham City continued on a barren run that would see them score just once in their first eight league games of the season, including a run of six matches without a goal.

In May, the West Midlands club lost 3-0 at Sunderland, growing fears that they would be embroiled in a relegation battle, while seeing the Lady Black Cats creep into title contention as the league paused for the World Cup.

In the last round of matches before the international break, Manchester City and Chelsea drew 1-1, while Arsenal were held to a 1-1 draw at Bristol Academy - two points dropped that would prove costly for the Gunners.

Chelsea quickly established a lead at the top of the table, beating Bristol Academy, Liverpool and Birmingham City, before a 0-0 draw at home to Arsenal ended their 100% start to the season.

Meanwhile, Manchester City were frustrated by injuries, suspensions and defeats by Arsenal and Liverpool.

Notts County hit five past Bristol to stake their claim for a role in the title race, and in doing so condemned Bristol - who lost all of the first four games - to the tag of favourites for relegation.

The 2015 Women's Super League One season started with a bang as newly-promoted Sunderland shocked champions Liverpool.

The Lady Black Cats upset the odds with a 2-1 away win that made WSL fans across the land sit up and take notice.

The result capped a bad week for Liverpool, coming three days after they had been knocked out of the FA Cup by Birmingham City.

Meanwhile, winger Gemma Davison got her Chelsea career off to a near-perfect start as she netted twice in their 2-1 win at Notts County.

As dusk begins to fall across the land, the sun sets on another thrilling Women's Super League One season.

Today, the final day of the campaign, sees Chelsea Ladies and Manchester City Women go all the way in their title fight.

Chelsea, two points clear at the top of the table, need to beat Sunderland to put their maiden league crown beyond the Sky Blues' reach.

If held to a draw, Chelsea could be pipped to the title on goal difference for the second successive season - if Man City get the better of Notts County by two or more goals.

There is plenty at stake as the Sky Blues are yet to guarantee a top two finish, with Arsenal still mathematically capable of snatching the last remaining Champions League spot if results go their way.
