Last year Donegal had to play eight games to reach the All-Ireland SFC quarter-final after winning the Ulster championship, that was eight games in 76 days, or eight games in 10 weeks.

This year, if the Tir Chonaill win today, they'll reach the same stage by playing just three games in seven weeks and they'll benefit from a freshness heading into the last eight. That could be a huge advantage later in the summer.

  3. Sold-out games and knockout ties as race for Sam heats uppublished at 14:39 BST 13 June

    Donegal v Cork (15:00 BST)

While World Cup fans must wait a couple of weeks for the knockout stages to start at Fifa's expanded 48-team quadrennial showpiece, jeopardy will be prominent during this weekend's All-Ireland SFC fixtures.

Like Fifa, the GAA tinkered with the format of its blue riband competition this year, meaning no county was eliminated in round one.

It means that for the first time this year, all 16 counties competing for the Sam Maguire Cup will be in action across the same weekend.

Four counties will secure a quarter-final spot, while it will be the end of the road for another four.

And with four of this weekend's games having already sold out, there is a sense of intense anticipation as the All-Ireland series heats up.

  4. Huge championship weekend aheadpublished at 14:35 BST 13 June

    Donegal v Cork (15:00 BST)

Four counties will make it back to Croke Park and book their place in the quarter-final of the All-Ireland SFC, another four will exit the championship and their summer will reach a premature end with eight matches across the weekend.

First up today at MacCumhaill Park (15:00 BST), Donegal square up to Cork as Jim McGuinness' side look to book their spot in the last eight after playing just three championship fixtures, although the loser will still have the safety net of a round three clash next weekend.

Later, all eyes will be on Celtic Park (19:00 BST) as one of Derry or Meath will exit the championship.

It sets it up perfectly, so let's get into the action...
