But that momentum has been checked, with Shane McGuigan hitting back-to-back scores to steady Derry once again.

You look at the spread of the scores. They've all chipped in. They're dominating out around the middle. It's been all Derry. It's so hard to see what Monaghan are going to do to bring things back.

Gabriel Bannigan has plenty to address at the break if Monaghan are to turn this around.

Ciarán Meenagh, by contrast, will be pleased with his side’s clinical edge for goals despite a series of missed efforts from distance, with Conor Glass’s midfield dominance helping Derry control possession and drive their attacking threat.

Derry manager Ciaran Meenagh won't turn his nose up at a 10-point lead at the break, but there's a feeling the Oak Leafers haven't made the most of their opportunities with five two-point efforts sailing wide and nine wides in total.

Monaghan will have the breeze for the second period - not a huge wind, but it may aid their long-range threat as they seek to narrow the gap.
