Monaghan began the half with renewed energy, tightening up defensively and limiting the Oak Leafers to few clear chances in the opening five minutes, while also registering the first point after the restart.
But that momentum has been checked, with Shane McGuigan hitting back-to-back scores to steady Derry once again.

Ciarán Meenagh, by contrast, will be pleased with his side’s clinical edge for goals despite a series of missed efforts from distance, with Conor Glass’s midfield dominance helping Derry control possession and drive their attacking threat.

Derry manager Ciaran Meenagh won't turn his nose up at a 10-point lead at the break, but there's a feeling the Oak Leafers haven't made the most of their opportunities with five two-point efforts sailing wide and nine wides in total.
Monaghan will have the breeze for the second period - not a huge wind, but it may aid their long-range threat as they seek to narrow the gap.
