Organisers for the 2016 Rio de Janeiro Olympics have sold fewer than half of all tickets so far with about five months to go until the first Games in South America. 

A total of 7.5 million tickets were issued for the event, which takes place from 5-21 August .

"About 47 percent of tickets have been sold," Rio 2016 communications director Mario Andrada said.

Brazil has been struggling with political turmoil, an economic downturn and the mosquito-borne Zika virus, which have all scrambled preparations for the Games awarded to Rio in 2009.

Victoria Pendleton will face up to seven rivals for her crucial ride at Wincanton on Wednesday ahead of the Cheltenham Festival.

The Olympic cycling champion hopes to partner Pacha Du Polder, for champion trainer Paul Nicholls, in the Foxhunter Chase at the Festival on Friday 18 March.

Pendleton will ride the horse in the 3.20 hunter chase at Wincanton in Somerset, with opposition including Big Fella Thanks, who was fourth in the 2010 Grand National.

A decision on whether Pendleton – who had her first horse riding lesson a year ago – lines up at Cheltenham will be made at some stage after Wednesday’s race.

Top trainer Paul Nicholls has been talking to Radio 5 live about Victoria Pendleton.

“A clear round today and everything going right would be massive confidence boost for us," he said.

"It's what she needs. When she rode the horse two runs ago when she was beaten by a head - in the point to point - she rode it very competently. A repeat of that and she'll be fine.

"She's come a very long way in a very short time. She's gaining valuable experience and she's well capable of riding winners as an amateur without any shadow of doubt."

Not long to wait to see how Pendleton goes. She rides in a few minutes time, in the 15:20 GMT at Wincanton.

The community club which first gave new Manchester United star Marcus Rashford the chance to play football have denied asking the Premier League giants for £2m.

Rashford played at Fletcher Moss Rangers as a child - and is one of several professionals to have done so, along with the likes of Danny Welbeck, Cameron Borthwick-Jackson and Tyler Blackett.

A club statement read: "It has been suggested in at least one national newspaper recently that Fletcher Moss Rangers are asking Manchester United for a donation of #2million for the development of Marcus whilst with our club. This is not the case."

Sir Bradley Wiggins and Great Britain qualified fastest in the men's team pursuit on day one of the Track Cycling World Championships in London.

Wiggins, riding in his first Track World Championships since 2008, combined with London 2012 gold medallist Steven Burke, Jonathan Dibben and Owain Doull to clock three minutes 55.664 seconds and advance in first place to the semi-finals.

Britain will meet fourth-fastest qualifiers Italy in the semi-finals of the four-man, 4km event, which take place on Thursday's second day of competition.

Italy qualified in 3mins 57.800secs. Australia (3:55.867) and defending champions New Zealand (3:57.050) will meet in the second semi-final, vying for a place in Thursday's final.

French Football Federation president Noel Le Graet wants Didier Deschamps to remain as coach beyond this summer's European Championship.

Deschamps led Les Bleus to the quarter-finals of the 2014 World Cup.

He is under contract until 2018 but has been linked to several leading clubs around Europe - including Chelsea.

Speaking to L'Equipe, Le Graet joked: "I have talked to him about it and he doesn't know how to spell Chelsea! More seriously, I extended his contract to avoid speculation on his future. I hope he stays until 2018, and even beyond."

Nemanja Matic wants Chelsea to finish the season with a flourish and a 13-game winning streak which could see them break into the Premier League's European places.

"It's very important to win games," Matic told Chelsea TV. "We're a big team and we have to do this if we want to be closer to the first four.

"It's very difficult to catch them, but we'll try our best to win every game."

Last season's champions climbed to eighth after the win over Norwich, five points adrift of fifth-placed Man United and eight behind fourth-placed Manchester City.
