Mark Cavendish helped Etixx-QuickStep team-mate Fernando Gaviria to victory on stage four of the Tour of Britain on Wednesday.

The Manxman guided the Colombian in the finale of the finish of the 217-kilometres route from Edinburgh to Blyth and Gaviria did the rest. 

Cavendish was seen celebrating in the background as his team-mate triumphed ahead of German Andre Greipel (Lotto-Soudal).

The race finishes in London on Sunday.

Italy centre Luca Morisi has been ruled out of the Rugby World Cup because of a torn ligament in his right knee.

The 20-year-old Treviso player suffered the injury during the friendly defeat against Wales in Cardiff on Saturday.

Gonzalo Garcia picked up an ankle problem against the Welsh, but is expected to continue his rehabilitation with the rest of the squad.

The final of this season's Women's Continental Cup will be held at Rotherham's New York Stadium, the Football Association has confirmed. 

The match will be played on Sunday, 1 November, concluding the 2015 season.

Arsenal Ladies have won the Continental Cup three times, before Manchester City Women beat the Gunners 1-0 in last year's final, played at Adams Park.

Man City striker Toni Duggan will miss the rest of the season with the ankle injury sustained against Liverpool Ladies.

It is a blow for City as they prepare to face Liverpool in the FA WSL on Thursday.

Excitement is clearly growing in Carlisle in the build-up to the Cumbrian's League Cup third-round trip to Anfield.

The European Club Association says its members have agreed to give one euro for every ticket sold at this month's Champions League and Europa League matches to charities supporting migrants trying to enter the continent.

The promise commits 80 clubs to donate money from their first home match in the group stage.

Announcing the pledge, ECA chairman Karl-Heinz Rummenigge said "this is a serious and big problem we have to face now in Europe and I believe football has a kind responsibility for these poor people". 

Rummenigge says up to three million euros could be raised, with other members invited to contribute. The idea was first proposed by FC Porto president Jorge Nuno Pinto da Costa.

Prince Ali Bin Al Hussein of Jordan is back in the race to be elected Fifa president having declared his candidacy on Wednesday four months after losing May's vote to Sepp Blatter.

It’s so hard to compare eras. On the one hand teams used to be less defensive tactically and high scoring games were more commonplace; on the other, there were no games against San Marino or Andorra.

Comparing competitive games and goals doesn’t help much. In the entire 1960s England only played 45 competitive internationals including Home Championship matches. In the decade starting in 2010 England have already played 38 competitive games.

The records of Rooney, Charlton, Lineker, Hurst, Finney, Lofthouse, Shearer and Owen all deserve to be celebrated, but Jimmy Greaves's 44 goals in 57 appearances might just give him the edge.

The Mirror:, external France midfielder Paul Pogba says he turned down the opportunity to leave Juventus this summer because he felt there was "no motive" to do so. The 22-year-old was linked with a move to Chelsea.

Sir Bobby Charlton can be classed as England’s greatest all-round attacker but in my book the greatest striker was Gary Lineker, a scorer of 10 goals in two World Cup finals and a Golden Boot winner with six goals at the Mexico World Cup in 1986.

And while he is best remembered for the agony of being left out of the 1966 World Cup final when England beat West Germany, he has a rival in the great Jimmy Greaves. 44 goals in 57 England games – what a record.

Northern Ireland striker Kyle Lafferty, who has scored seven goals in eight Euro 2016 qualifying matches, is struggling for first-team football at Norwich but says he is determined to fight for his place at the Premier League club.

Sebastian Coe, the new IAAF president, is to be called to Parliament to be grilled about his claim that media investigations into widespread doping in athletics were a "declaration of war" on the sport.

Lord Coe is to be called to the next culture, media and sport select committee hearing into allegations that hundreds of athletes had suspicious blood results which were not followed up by the governing body.

"I think the 'declaration of war' remark was inappropriate. The UK Anti-Doping president suggested it was because he was standing for the IAAF presidency - what we want to understand is what he actually thinks now he is president of the IAAF."
