One in 322 billion - club golfer defies birdie odds

An ordinary round of golf turned into an extraordinary masterclass as an English amateur defied astronomical odds to card eight birdies across just nine holes.

Allan Harrison started his round at Fairhaven Golf Club with four dropped shots on the front nine before a "pasty and a drink" at the halfway house gave him a burst of life.

The 64-year-old then fired seven consecutive birdies and eight in nine holes - a run of form rarely seen in professional golf, let alone at an amateur level.

Harrison has some prowess as a former foursomes partner of Tommy Fleetwood at Southport and Ainsdale Golf Club.

England Golf calculated the odds across all amateur golfers for making eight birdies in nine holes as an astonishing one in 322 billion.

For Harrison, whose 0.4 handicap signals a high level of ability, the odds were said to be one in 455,000.

The leader in birdie average on the PGA Tour typically records around 4.8-5.0 birdies per 18 holes, which equates to 2.5 per nine holes.

"I was four over after the front nine," Harrison said.

"I went into the halfway house, had a pasty and a drink, and the lads laughed when I said I'd start the back nine fresh."

Had he run up nine consecutive birdies, Harrison would have achieved the same tally as the PGA Tour's record - with nine having been achieved by American Mark Calcavecchia at the 2009 Canadian Open and fellow US player Kevin Chappell at the Greenbrier in 2019.

But he just missed out on a place in the record books despite almost holing his tee-shot at the 157-yard par-three 17th.

"My playing partner pointed out the pitch mark and said I must've nearly holed out - but it ran six feet past and I misread the putt," said Harrison of his only par on the back nine.

Harrison led the Silver Pheasant tournament on 40 points after the first round, but he could not replicate his heroics on the second day as he finished second overall.

Although England Golf's calculations point to an extraordinarily high unlikelihood of an amateur golfer having eight birdies in nine holes, Harrison is not alone in having achieved the feat in 2026.

Only last month, Australian Amelia Harris, 18, had eight in nine on her back nine, external in the first round of the US Girls' Junior tournament in Durham, North Carolina.
